According to Fox News, approximately 1.4 million illegal immigrants in the United States have been ordered deported by federal immigration judges.
A U.S. official said that about 13,000 of the people who were told to go back to their home countries are being held by U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE).
Only a few thousand are in jail, and many more are in the U.S. illegally, even though they have been told to leave. There were no numbers available for how many people are being held in local or state jails.
The number 1.4 million means that the cases of those who were ordered to be sent back have been heard and decided. According to the official, some may still have ways to appeal.
The number also changes as illegal immigrants are deported and others are taken out of the country. It goes back many years and through several presidential administrations.
Trump has said that he will deport a lot of people, starting with criminal illegal immigrants, when he takes office on January 20.
Texas is giving the new government a plot of land with more than 1,400 acres in the Rio Grande Valley, close to the border, where it can hold its mass deportation operation.
Because Trump made that promise, some cities have promised to keep illegal immigrants safe from these kinds of raids and not work with federal immigration officials.
In response to Trump, Los Angeles city leaders voted on Tuesday to officially make the city a sanctuary city. A few minutes after the vote at City Hall, the Los Angeles Unified School District also approved a vote to become a sanctuary district.
This means that district employees cannot voluntarily help immigration authorities by doing things like sharing information about students’ immigration status.
ICE has been criticizing sanctuary cities for years because they do not work with immigration authorities. This is especially true when illegal immigrant criminals commit more crimes or more serious crimes after being released from local jail.
