Aubrey Plaza broke her silence Monday, three days after her husband Jeff Baena died.
“This is an unimaginable tragedy,” she and the Baena/Stern family said in a statement released to Fox News Digital. “We are extremely grateful to everyone who has offered help. Please respect our privacy at this time.
The film director and writer committed suicide on January 3, according to the County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner. He was 47.
The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that officers responded to a call near Baena’s home on Friday. Officials told Fox News Digital that the victim died on the scene.
A complete report from the medical examiner’s office will not be available until the case has been closed. Baena and Plaza kept their relationship private after meeting in 2011. It’s unclear when the two married, but Plaza confirmed the couple’s marriage status in 2021 via Instagram post.
Plaza did not attend the Golden Globes on Sunday, despite being announced as a presenter.
During his Golden Globes acceptance speech on Sunday night, director Brady Corbet mentioned the death of the director of “Spin Me Round”. Corbet won best director for “The Brutalist.” He thanked the award show for highlighting his film before departing with a brief tribute to Baena.
“Finally, tonight, my heart is with Aubrey Plaza and Jeff’s family,” Corbet concluded his speech. “Goodnight.”
Baena was born and raised in Miami. He studied film at New York University and started his career in Los Angeles.
He made his directorial debut with “Life After Beth,” starring Plaza, in 2014. Baena was known for movies like “The Little Hours,” “Horse Girl,” and “Joshy.”
