GREENFIELD, Wis. – Authorities in central Wisconsin are looking into the unsolved case of Robert Christian, who vanished on September 16, 1977.
Christian, a Madison resident, had intended to meet a friend for bow hunting near Baraboo. When he did not show up, his family began searching around his customary hunting grounds in Greenfield, along Tower Road between Bluff Road and the Sauk/Columbia County line.
Later, Christian’s 1977 AMC Hornet was found abandoned near a radio tower. The car’s wheels and batteries were missing, the doors were unlocked, and the majority of his personal goods and hunting gear were gone.
A thorough search, which included ground teams, bloodhounds, and an Army National Guard aircraft unit, turned up no evidence of Christian.
Approximately a week later, detectives followed a lead to a quarry near the Badger Army Ammunition Plant. They discovered four tires and hubcaps that were compatible with Christian’s AMC Hornet, though it is unknown if these were removed during his abduction or after his car was abandoned.
At around 8:00 p.m. on the night of Christian’s disappearance, a witness reported seeing a car similar to Christian’s AMC Hornet near the Durward’s Glen Retreat Center.
The driver, a young man who resembled Christian, informed the witness that he was seeking for a friend before driving away. His identity was never confirmed.
The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office is still looking for information that will help solve this decades-old mystery. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Sauk County Sheriff’s Office at 608-355-3210.
