Who does Georgia miss from the SEC schedule?
Arkansas, LSU, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt
Georgia has reason to be upset. That is not to argue that missing LSU, Missouri, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Texas A&M is a terrible thing, but you wouldn’t mind missing Arkansas. And yes, you still want Vanderbilt to play one of your eight SEC games.
Having saying that, it’s not all bad. Georgia gets to play.
Georgia Football Schedule: The Good and the Bad
The positives include Mississippi State and Kentucky. There is no true speed bump in the SEC, but having two teams that struggled as much as those two will be beneficial.
Yes, Georgia has to face Alabama and Texas, but both must come to Athens. So does Ole Miss. Tennessee and Auburn aren’t layups, but if Georgia is Georgia, it can win those two, which are its only road games until November.
Georgia Tech is dangerous, as evidenced by last year’s results, but assuming no major shock occurs, Georgia should have four victories owing to the non-conference schedule. But …
The Bad: It’s Georgia. It’s the SEC Championship, College Football Playoff, and national championship or bust. Losing two games is disastrous, and losing three would result in a complete catastrophe.
At Tennessee, Alabama, Ole Miss, Florida, and Texas. Georgia can and should win the most of them, but it must win practically all of them, and it cannot afford to lose to Auburn on the road, Kentucky, or Mississippi State.
Georgia Football Schedule: Best and worst-case scenarios.
Best Case Scenario: It is Georgia. It beats everyone.
Georgia’s schedule includes home games versus Alabama and Texas, challenging games in Tennessee and Florida, and one unexpected game against Kentucky. At the very least, even a loss will have little bearing on the SEC Championship race.
Worst-case scenario: Georgia loses against Tennessee. This could be a momentum club that feeds off the confidence of a good win, and if they lose to Tennessee, watch out for Alabama.
The Dawgs have already lost two games before facing Florida and Texas in the second half of the season, and they will not even compete for the SEC Championship. Worse, the College Football Playoff will no longer be an option by early November.
Season Prediction: (January 30) Georgia may not return to its dominant national championship form, but it will not be as underwhelming as last year. It defeats Alabama and Texas at home, and it pulls off a thriller at Tennessee, but there is a loss – keep an eye out for the party with Florida, which may go the other way – but there will be no more whiffs as Georgia returns to the CFP.
The Season Prediction will be revised multiple times over the offseason.
