In Texas, drivers 79 years of age and older have specific requirements for driver’s license renewal. These requirements are put in place to ensure the safety and fitness of senior drivers. Here’s what senior drivers in Texas need to know about license renewal:
- Renewal Frequency:
- Drivers aged 79 to 84 must renew their licenses in person every six years.
- Drivers aged 85 or older must renew their licenses in person every two years.
- Renewal Method: Drivers age 79 or older are prohibited from renewing their licenses online or by mail and must renew in person at a local Driver License Office.
- Vision and Medical Evaluations: Drivers aged 79 or over must undergo a vision test and may be required to undergo a medical evaluation. If the applicant’s eyesight is less than 20/70 with correction, or 20/40 without, an examination by a vision specialist is required.
- Testing: DPS personnel may require a written knowledge test and/or a road test if deemed necessary.
- License Validity Period: For drivers between 18 and 84, a Texas license is valid for six years.
- Renewal Fee: Drivers age 85 and older pay $9 to renew their license. Drivers between 18 and 84 will pay $25.
- When to Renew: You can renew your Texas driver license up to a year before it expires and up to two years after it expires. If two years have passed since your license expired, you must apply for a new license and pass the required tests.
