Renewal Cycle
In Maryland, all drivers, regardless of age, must renew their licenses every eight years. There are no special provisions for older drivers regarding the renewal cycle, unlike some other states that have shorter renewal periods for seniors.
Vision Test Requirements
All drivers aged 40 and older must undergo a vision test at every license renewal. This can be conducted by the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) or by an outside ophthalmologist or optometrist. The vision test includes assessments of binocular acuity and peripheral vision.
Written and Road Tests
While not mandatory for all seniors, a written test may be required if the MVA identifies any signs of driver impairment. Similarly, a road test is only required if there are indications of impairment.
Reporting Concerns About a Driver
If there are concerns about an older driver’s safety, procedures are in place to report these to the MVA. This can involve contacting the Driver Wellness and Safety Division for assistance.
REAL ID Compliance
Starting May 7, 2025, all Maryland residents will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or ID card to board domestic flights or access certain federal facilities.
Renewal Process
Maryland drivers can renew their licenses through the Maryland Department of Transportation. The process typically does not require in-person visits unless specified by the MVA.

For more detailed information, including downloadable resources like the “Maryland Driver’s Manual,” drivers can visit the MVA website or contact local MVA offices.
