Nine bodies, believed to be missing students, were discovered dismembered on a Mexican highway, according to local reports.
The remains of four women and five men from Tlaxcala, Mexico, were discovered on the evening of Sunday, March 2 in the municipality of San José Miahuatlán, Puebla, according to El Financiero on Tuesday, March 4.
The Mexican national guard did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
“So far, I cannot provide information; there are lines of investigation that I cannot reveal due to confidentiality,” Idamis Pastor Betancourt, head of the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), said at a press conference on Monday, March 3.
All relevant investigations are being conducted. When we have a response and the investigation is completed, we will be able to provide more information.” Betancourt continued.
Betancourt declined to identify the victims on Monday. According to Central Puebla Irreverente, only two bodies were identified using their ID cards: Angie Lizeth P.G., 29, who was reported missing from Santa MarĂa Huatulco in Oaxaca on February 28, and Leslie N.T., 21, who was reported missing from San Pedro Pochutla in Oaxaca on the same date.
Angie Lizeth P.G. was previously identified by the Oaxacan Attorney General as Angie Lizeth Perez Garcia. She had been driving in a Ford Fiesta with a Yucatan license plate with Brenda Mariel Salas Moya, who had also been reported missing but was later discovered alive in Puebla.
Meanwhile, a city official in Tetla, Tlaxcala, identified Leslie N.T. on Facebook as Lesly Noya Trejo. “I send my heartfelt condolences to her family and friends,” wrote the official, Yolanda Carrillo Garcia.
Raúl Emmanuel González Lozano and Noemà Yamileth Lopez Moratilla, both 28, were reported missing by the Oaxaca Attorney General. They were last seen driving an Audi with Guerrero license plates in San Pedro Pochutla on February 28.
Central Puebla Irreverente also stated that the abandoned dark gray Volkswagen Vento car with Tlaxcala license plates where the deceased individuals were discovered was discovered on the Cuacnopalan-Oaxaca highway near San Jose Miahuatlán, Puebla.
Jacqueline Ailet Meza is also missing, having been reported missing from Zipolite on February 28. According to El PaĂs, her mother posted on Facebook that she had been “taken.”
“My daughter went missing last night at Zipolite Beach in Huatulco. According to El PaĂs, the mother wrote, “They took her and we have no idea what happened to my daughter.” She stated that her daughter had two young children, aged five and three, “waiting for her.”
Four bodies were reportedly discovered in the vehicle’s trunk, while a bloodied tarp and five more bodies were discovered inside the Volkswagen Vento. According to Central Puebla Irreverente, officials recovered a bag containing eight pairs of hands.
