Receiving assistance with food purchases does not have to be difficult. In Texas, the SNAP program (also known as nutrition assistance) is a viable option for many families, but you must understand the requirements, procedures, and key dates.
We’ve left you with the essential information, including the payment schedule for March 6 to 16, 2025 (the closest dates).
If you think there isn’t a debit card that allows you to pay for basic groceries… Actually, there is: it’s the Lone Star Card, which Texas uses to deliver SNAP benefits.
In addition to using it in physical stores, you can purchase seeds to grow your own food (yes, it’s true!). The Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) manages the program, so everything is regulated.
Do you meet SNAP requirements in Texas?
First and foremost, you must be a Texas resident with US citizenship or legal residency. The second is your income. The limit is 130% of the federal poverty level.
For example, if you live alone, your monthly salary should not be more than $2,005, while for a couple, the limit is $2,712. However, if there is a child at home, the maximum number rises.
If you are between 18 and 52 years old and do not have children, you must work at least 20 hours per week or participate in a training program.
But don’t worry, there are some exceptions if you’re pregnant, disabled, or in a similar situation. They will also examine your savings (bank accounts, assets other than your home or car), but the limits are flexible.

For older adults or people with disabilities, the TSAP program is the solution. If everyone in your household is over 60 or has a disability, the Simplified Application Project (TSAP) is your best ally.
With this program, the application is shorter, no interviews are required to renew, and the benefits last three years rather than six months. For more information, see the TSAP for SNAP page.
