Immigrants make up almost a quarter of the people living in the United States. A lot of immigrants who live in the U.S. may be thinking if they can get stimulus checks.
Stimulus checks are meant to get the economy going when people are not spending much because of broad financial problems. These checks often give people much-needed financial help when they are having a hard time paying their bills.
Checks from the government can help families in the short term, and immigrant families are just as eager to get these funds.
Covid-19 and stimulus checks
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Congress sent three rounds of stimulus checks to families across the country. During the pandemic, families lost a lot of money on wages, so these checks helped them pay their bills.
During Covid-19, a lot of families had a very hard time with money. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, almost 10 million people lost their jobs, and other families were sad about the loss of people who were making money.
Families got their first round of stimulus checks during the pandemic. They were worth $1,200, plus an extra $500 for each dependent. In the second round, each person got $600, and in the third round, each person got $1,400.
You can still get this payment even if you did not get the third round of stimulus money or did not get the full amount you were supposed to get.
Immigrant status and filling for stimulus checks
If you never got the third COVID-19 stimulus check, you can file for it if you meet the following conditions:
- A maximum income limit of $80,000 for single-filers and a maximum income limit of $160,000 for married tax-payers filling jointly.
- You must possess a social security number to file and claim the stimulus payment and have permission to reside in the U.S
- File for the stimulus payment before 18 April 2025 by filing your 2020 and 2021 taxes to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit.
The Recovery Rebate Credit, which is worth $1,400, may also be available to immigrants.
You can only come to the United States as an immigrant if you are married to or depending on a resident who has a valid social security number. You can also ask for the payments if you are a qualified resident alien or a permanent resident.
Immigrants in the U.S. face unique financial challenges
About 11 million people live in the U.S. without having legal resident status. It is common for illegal immigrants living in the U.S. to have limited access to banking services, higher rates of poverty, and not be able to get help from the government.
Many illegal immigrants who are having trouble with money are unable to get the financial help that stimulus programs are meant to give, especially to people with low incomes.
Undocumented immigrants have come to the U.S. in large numbers to escape countries that are often unsafe, at war, do not offer enough job opportunities, or have forced people to leave their homes.
It is important to remember that illegal immigrants can get medical help and send their kids to school without having to say that they are immigrants.
A lot of illegal immigrants work important jobs in the U.S., but because they are not here legally, they can not get social security or other government benefits.
At the moment, there is no easy way for undocumented foreigners to seek residence in the U.S. without risking being sent back to their home country. Usually, you have to be outside of the U.S. to legally enter the country.
Low- and middle-income families depend on stimulus payouts. However, undocumented immigrant families have a hard time getting these benefits, even though they contribute to society and the economy.
In the upcoming November elections, immigration rules will be very important in deciding who people vote for. Some people think that getting into the U.S. should not be so hard, while others think that the rules should be tighter.
