For the second month in a row, the US Mint made more coins in August than the previous month. However, the total output stayed below 1 billion coins for the twelfth month in a row, after going over that mark for eight months in a row.
The U.S. Mint made 405.2 million coins for circulation in August. These were all cents and quarters.
Compared to the previous month, this is a 72.3% rise, but a 60.7% drop from August 2023. The Mint did not report making any nickels or dimes for the fourth time this year and the second month in a row.
Here’s how the month compares to others in the past year:

One of the main jobs of the U.S. Mint is to make coins when people want them. The Mint makes, sells, and then sends circulating coins to Federal Reserve Banks and their coin machines so that they can serve private banks and other financial institutions.
Each one-cent coin costs the Mint 3.07 cents to make and send out, but the Federal Reserve always orders more of them than any other amount.
The Mint made 254.4 million Lincoln cents in August, which is 210.2% more than the total number of cents made in July. This is 62.8% of all circulating-quality coins made that month.
Mintages of Native American Dollars and Kennedy Halves
The U.S. Mint also makes half dollars and dollars that are good for everyday use. The Federal Reserve does not buy Native American $1 coins anymore, but they are still made in a quality that can be used in everyday life for coin collectors. Up until the years 2021, 2022, and 2023, the same was true for Kennedy half dollars.
Most of the time, the U.S. Mint makes enough of both types of money in January to cover the whole year. However, this was not the case for Kennedy halves in the three years before this.
That is because, out of the blue, the Federal Reserve ordered millions more to be put into circulation, with 12 million, 7 million, and 18 million in fiscal years 2021, 2022, and 2023, respectively.
It has not been confirmed if any 2024 Kennedy half dollars have been made for regular use, but it is likely that they have. There were changes in the number of half dollars made in January (+5.7 million), March (+1.9 million), April (+2.6 million), May (+3.2 million), June (+4.9 million), and July (+3.2 million).
The most recent numbers show that Philadelphia made 9.9 million coins and Denver made 11.6 million, for a total of 21.5 million.
In 2023, 27.8 million coins were made in Denver and 30.2 million coins were made in Philadelphia. Together, they made 58 million coins, which was the most since 66.6 million were made in 1983.
The Native American dollar’s mintages were changed in February instead of January, which is not how they usually are done. The reason for this change was that there had been no known dollar minting in Denver in January.
The total number of dollar coins made has stayed at 2.24 million since February. Denver and Philadelphia minted 1.12 million coins each, which is the same number as in 2023.
The U.S. Mint began selling rolls, bags, and boxes of 2024 Native American dollars made in Denver and Philadelphia on January 29. On April 23, the office began selling rolls and bags of 2024 Kennedy halves that were in circulation.
The next table shows how many 2024 circulating coins were made at each mint, along with their denominations and designs.

If production keeps up at the rate it is now through December, 4.96 billion coins will be made every year in 2024. In 2023, the U.S. Mint made just over 11.38 billion coins for circulation, which was the lowest amount since 2012.

2024 Quarter Mintages
Along with the 2024 Native American dollar, which has a design that will only be used that year, the U.S. Mint has also released the first three of five 2024 American Women QuartersTM. These three coins are the 11th, 12th, and 13th in the series, and each has its own design.
The first quarter design for this year, the Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray quarter, hit the streets on January 2. From February 1, the public could buy rolls and bags of quarters from the Mint.
There were 354.2 million Murray quarters made, with 185.8 million coming from Denver and 168.4 million coming from Philadelphia. These numbers have not changed since they were first reported in March.
Coins made with Patsy Takemoto Mink started being used on March 25, and on March 28, the U.S. Mint started selling them in rolls and bags to the public.
The latest figures show Patsy Takemoto Mink quarter mintages at 187.2 million from Denver and 210.2 million from Philadelphia, for a combined 397.4 million.
The Dr. Mary Edwards Walker quarters went into circulation on June 3, and on June 17, the U.S. Mint began selling them to the public in rolls and bags. As of now, 159.4 million Dr. Mary Edwards quarters have been made in Denver and 141.2 million have been made in Philadelphia, for a total of 300.6 million.

As of now, this is the quarter with the fewest coins ever made. In terms of how few are made by facility across the whole line, both the 2024-P and the 2024-D are the rarest.
So far this year, 160.8 million quarters have been made, but the U.S. Mint has not yet officially given them a design. This is a sample of the Celia Cruz quarters that will be made.
More will be made. The Celia Cruz quarters went into circulation on August 5, and on August 7, the U.S. Mint sold rolls and bags of them to the public.
