Shelley Luther, the former Dallas salon owner who was imprisoned after reopening her business during the COVID-19 pandemic, is set to visit the Texas state capitol.
Luther defeated Democrat Tiffany Drake on Tuesday night, winning Texas House District 62 with more than 75% of the vote.
Luther made national headlines for reopening her far North Dallas salon in defiance of countywide restrictions.
In 2020, she spent seven days in jail after a judge in Dallas County found her guilty of both criminal and civil contempt of court.
A court told Luther’s salon, Salon à la Mode, to close, and she was fined $1,000 every day it was open.
In 2020, Luther ran for state Senate but lost to Drew Springer in a runoff in District 30.
In the 2022 Republican primary for Texas House District 62, she lost to Reggie Smith, who was already in office. Luther beat Smith in the primary on March 5 and will now run against him in the general election in 2024.
“Shelley Luther is not afraid to stand up for what she believes in and will not ever back down from a fight,” says Luther’s site.
Grayson, Franklin, Fannin, and Delta counties are all in House District 62.
