Susan Smith, a convicted child murderer, “threw a tantrum” in her cell after her request for parole was denied, according to the New York Post.
Smith became well-known in 1994 when police found that she killed her two young sons, Michael, 3, and Alex, 14 months, on purpose by putting them in her car and rolling it into a lake in South Carolina.
Smith told the police at the time that a Black man had stolen her car and taken her kids. Because of that racist lie, police went into Black neighborhoods to look for possible suspects.
Smith even went on the national news every day to ask for her kids to be returned. After nine days, she gave up and said there was no carjacker.
After being found guilty of murder, she was given a life sentence in prison. On Wednesday, she had her first parole hearing.
She cried and said she was sorry for killing her sons. The 53-year-old woman said she felt bad about what she did and was sure that God would forgive her.
Forgive me, God, because I am a Christian, she told the parole board. They were asked to “show the same kind of mercy” in their decision.
But the seven-person South Carolina Board of Parole did not change their minds and turned down her request.
A person who saw what happened after the hearing told the Post that Smith, who is 53 years old, was “angry” when she got back to her cell at the Greenwood Leath Correctional Institution.
A witness said, “She was angry and crying.” “Waving her hands around, very angry. It looked like she had a temper tantrum.
The source who talked to the news outlet made it clear that the other prisoners did not feel sorry for her. They told the paper that they thought her denial was “funny.”
“I do not think she was thinking about her sons at all yesterday,” they shared. “She was clearly just thinking about herself.”
Smith has been in prison for 30 years and can apply for parole every two years. Her ex-husband David Smith does not think she should ever be freed, though.
On the day of her parole hearing, he told Today, “I do not think she will ever be broken again.” “Even to me, I do not think she is ever really felt bad about what she did.”
