Social Security, the government agency that gives out millions of monthly benefits, has said that the last SSI payment for this year will be on November 29, which is Black Friday.
The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program at the federal level helps more than 7 million people with low incomes and few resources every month.
SSI is given to people blind and with certain disabilities of any age, even children, as well as to people 65 and older. It is important to note that the SSA usually sends out SSI checks on the first of every month.
However, because December 1st is a Sunday, they moved that payment to Friday, November 29th, which is when Social Security payments are supposed to happen.
How does the government agency figure out SSI payment amounts?
Before sending someone their SSI payment, the SSA will send them a letter telling them when and how much the payment will be.
Lather, the first SSI payment is calculated by Social Security beginning the first full month after the person applies for or is approved for SSI. Every month, the amount paid might be different.
The amount is based on other income and where the person lives. Social Security will let the person know ahead of time every time the amount of the payment changes.
Both federal and state SSI benefits may be raised to keep up with rising costs of living. Usually, these price hikes happen in January.
Sometimes, the payment may be split between the date of eligibility and the end of the month when the person becomes eligible again after being ineligible.
If someone qualifies on the tenth of the month, for example, they will get an SSI payment based on how many days have passed since the tenth. First, the person’s income and where they live are taken into account when figuring out how much to pay.
It is worked out from there. Additionally, if a person or couple lives with someone else and gets food and shelter from that person, their base SSI payment will be cut in half.
This decrease takes the place of setting the exact amount of money that will be given to help. Support includes food, a place to live, or both that someone gives to someone or pays for them.
What are the current SSI payment rates in 2024?
This year, the most a person can get from SSI per month is $943, and the most a couple can get is $1,415 per month.
The Northern Mariana Islands, Arizona, Mississippi, North Dakota, and West Virginia, as well as the states of those states, do not join the federal SSI payment.
Every other state and territory adds to what the federal government gives to SSI. We run the state supplements for some states, but they run their own programs for others.
We handle state supplements for California, Delaware, Hawaii, Iowa, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont. These states are covered in whole or in part. It is also true for the District of Columbia.
All of the person’s federal and state SSI payments are put together in one check every month if the SSA is in charge of the state’s extra payment.
According to where a person lives, states can change the amount of the payment they make. In some states, other income might not be added either.
Can homeless people receive an SSI payment?
The SSI program can help people who are homeless find housing by giving them money every month. But getting an SSI payment does not require having a home.
If someone is homeless, Social Security can set up for them to get their SSI benefits electronically. An organization can be a mail drop off point so that someone who is homeless can get important mail from us at the address the organization gives them.
