People who work in the United States do not all have the same chances to get a monthly Social Security check. This is very clear when you look at school teachers, whose monthly payment is lower because they also get pension money.
The goal of this bill is to change that so that the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO) are no longer in place.
Some retirees who get pensions will see their Social Security benefits cut by a lot because of these two rules. This is often very unfair.
This affects almost three million people in the United States. Police officers, firemen, and public school teachers are some of these groups. Because of the WEP and the GPO, the Social Security checks of a lot of people are going down.
How do the WEP and GPO affect Social Security checks?
Let us look at the two cases separately to get a better idea of what is going on. In the end, they are not the same, even though our Social Security check is smaller than it used to be.
These are the GPO and the WEP:
WEP. That is what it stands for: Windfall Elimination Provision. Under the WEP, people whose pension income comes from public sector jobs is “non-covered” will get less money from Social Security.

Because this kind of work does not pay payroll taxes, it usually does not lead to the same kind of retirement check as other types of work.
GPO. This stands for “Government Pension Offset.” If a pensioner’s income is not covered, the GPO cuts checks to a spouse or parent who died. It does not touch as many people as the WEP, but it is still important.
The main goal of this bill is to get rid of this unfairness completely so that people in these cases can get a fair Social Security check. However, there is still a long way to go.
The first step has already been taken, though. Americans in this situation will be able to get a better retirement and a Social Security check that is based on how much they worked over time.
