A 19-year-old Walmart worker was found dead in the store’s walk-in bakery oven over the weekend. Since then, more disturbing facts have come to light.
The Daily Mail released emergency call records on Tuesday. In them, a dispatcher talks to other dispatchers about a call about a woman at a Halifax, Nova Scotia, Walmart who is “locked in an oven in the bakery.”
“The oven is on, and we do not know if the staff can turn it off,” they said.
Later, another dispatcher asked their coworkers, “The person trapped in the… on their… did we turn off the power for that? Does the staff want to turn off the power?” In case we do get in touch.
Another emergency dispatcher replied that the woman “was out of the oven upon arrival” and that the police were taking care of the situation.
The city of Halifax said in a statement on Tuesday that the event is being looked into by regional police, Canada’s Center for Occupational Health and Safety, and the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service.
The statement said the review by many agencies is “complex” and could take a “significant amount of time” to finish.
In its statement, the city did not name the person who died, but an executive of the Maritime Sikh Society used GoFundMe to name her as Gursimran Kaur, who was from India.
Kaur and her mother had both worked at Walmart for two years.
A spokeswoman for Walmart, Amanda Moss, told ABC News on Tuesday, “Our deepest thoughts are with our associate and their family.”
Moss said, “Our main goal is still to care for our employees and make sure they have the help they need.” “Our store is closing for now.”
