If your boyfriend in North Dakota gets $30 million in an estate, you poison and kill him. The gift turned out to be a scam.
A woman in the US poisoned her boyfriend to death because she thought he had received $30 million. She later learned it was all a scam.
People says the woman, whose name is Ina Thea Kenoyer, was caught in October of last year and charged with class AA felony murder, which is the worst kind of murder charge in North Dakota.
During the investigation, police found what they thought was antifreeze in a bottle of Windex in the living room of the pair.
She admitted to killing her longtime boyfriend on Wednesday. Reporters say she could now spend the rest of her life in jail without the chance to get out.
The police had already decided that Ms. Kenoyer wanted to kill her 51-year-old boyfriend Steven Edward Riley Jr. for money reasons. But now detectives say they think the inheritance was a fake.
People says that the arrest document says that Mr. Riley planned to break up with his girlfriend of ten years.
But in September, as he and his friends were driving to the airport to meet with a lawyer about what he thought was his newfound wealth, he complained of stomach pain. His friends said he looked like he was drunk, but later tests showed that he wasn’t.
Back then, Ms. Kenoyer, who said she was a doctor, said he had a heat stroke and would get better if he rested at home. Investigators went to his house and found a beer bottle and a plastic mug with green liquid that matched the bottle of Windex.
The police learned from Mr. Riley’s friends that Ms. Kenoyer had talked about killing her boyfriend with antifreeze in the past. The coroner then looked for the main ingredient and found that he had dangerously high amounts of ethylene glycol in his body.
But Ms. Kenoyer said her boyfriend had heat stroke because he had been drinking during the day. She also gave a number of possible reasons for the poison-like symptoms.
Ms. Kenoyer said she was Ms. Riley’s common-law wife and that she was going to give his sudden wealth to his son.
But arrest records that the news outlet got show that she got angry when detectives told her that the state would not recognize her as his common-law wife. In the end, she admitted that she had put antifreeze in his sweet tea before his meeting with the lawyer.
The punishment for Ms. Kenoyer is now set for August 14. Before she is sentenced, she may have to go through another psychological exam.
