Nick Cannon has broken his silence on a new mental health diagnosis that he is learning to live with.
Earlier this month, the 44-year-old father of twelve revealed on his Counsel Culture podcast that he had been diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder.
As the Mayo Clinic says, sufferers have an unhealthy sense of how important they are and like to be the center of attention. People who have narcissistic personality disorder may also find it hard to care about how other people feel.
People think that narcissistic personality disorder, like other personality disorders, lasts a person’s whole life, but the symptoms can get better with strong therapy.
Cooking Thanksgiving dinners at the Los Angeles Mission on Wednesday, Cannon told People that he had always thought he might have mental health problems that had not been diagnosed.
“I still do not fully understand it, but I have always wanted to be tested for it.” He said, “I did a bunch of tests.” “I have been told I have ADHD.” The problem was dyslexia even when I was a child, but I have always known that I am a neurodiverse person.
The Wild ‘N Out host also said that he is treating his new condition, which gives him a chance to make himself and his life better.
I feel like there are a lot of labels out there, but it is nice to be able to accept them and say, “Look, I am making progress.” Please help me. “Show me.” I just embrace mental health and therapy in such a strong way,’ he explained.
“It works for me to be able to say I am an example for others and heal at the same time.”
Cannon had psychologist Dr. Cheyenne Bryant on his podcast before to give him a diagnosis.
It was clear from their conversation that he had a lot of the “markers” for narcissistic personality disorder.
But the change made him feel strong as he learned more about the disorder through his “research.”
We do not know what causes narcissistic personality disorder yet, but things that happened in childhood may play a part in getting it.
Parents-child relationships that are not healthy are thought to play a part, but many other behaviors could also cause NPD.
Harvard Medical School says that kids who are rejected by their parents or who are criticized too much could be at risk. Kids who are praised too much by adults could also be at risk of getting the disorder.
Mental illness can show up in many different ways, and while some people with NPD can still live mostly normal, useful lives, it may be very difficult for others.
Most of the time, it happens along with other mental health problems, like depression, anxiety, substance abuse, bipolar disorder, or other personality disorders.
About 5% of adults in the US have this personality disorder, and men are about 50% more likely than women to have it.
Cannon is famous for both his acting and hosting work, but his huge family is almost as well-known.
Since having his first child in 2011, the Drumline star has had 12 children with different women.
In 2011, his first two children, 13-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe, were born to Mariyah Carey, who was married at the time.
He then had three more children with the model Britney Bell: Golden Sage, seven; Powerful Queen, three; and Rise Messiah, fourteen months.
In the years between having kids with Bell, Cannon had twin sons, three-year-old Zion Mixolydian and Zillion Heir with DJ Abby De La Rosa.
In July 2022, he had his son Legendary Love, who is now two years old, with model-turned-reality star Bre Tiesi.
It was only two months later that his daughter Onyx Ice, two, was born to LaNisha Cole, who used to be a Price Is Right model.
In November 2022, Cannon and De La Rosa had their third child together. It was a daughter named Beautiful Zeppelin, who is now two years old.
Cannon had a son named Zen with model Alyssa Scott. He died in December 2021 after being diagnosed with brain cancer, which was a terrible tragedy.
Zen had hydrocephalus before that diagnosis. This is a condition in which fluid builds up inside the skull and presses on the brain.
In December 2022, Scott gave birth to their second child, 23-month-old Halo Marie. This gave them a second chance to be parents.
Cannon joked with People not long ago that he is “a busy man” around Thanksgiving because he has to go to “a bunch of dinners” with his different families.
“That is really hard,” he said.
