Sugar Bowl Delayed 24 Hours
The 2025 College Football Playoff Quarterfinal between Notre Dame and Georgia will be postponed until at least Thursday night due to the horrific New Year’s Eve attack in New Orleans, which killed 15 people and injured over 35 others.
WDSU, the NBC news affiliate in New Orleans, was the first to report that Sugar Bowl officials were considering delaying the game, which was later confirmed by WSB-TV in Atlanta.
Originally, the game was supposed to be moved from Wednesday to Thursday night – there was a second security sweep of the stadium with bomb-sniffing dogs – but ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that “no official date” had been set. This was later changed to Thursday.
The winner of the Allstate Sugar Bowl will face Penn State in the Capital One Orange Bowl on January 9th in Miami. From a football and logistical standpoint, the game cannot be delayed much longer than Thursday. There has been no discussion or hint of moving the game to another site.
