A federal politician from Iowa has filed legislation that he thinks will put an end to some unethical behaviors in Washington, D.C.
According to Iowa’s Third Congressional District Representative Zach Nunn, the bipartisan No Corruption in Government Act would prohibit stock trading while members of Congress are serving in the legislature, triple the lobbying ban for congressional members, and eliminate automatic annual pay raises, which are currently set at the maximum allowable under current law of 3.8 percent for US Representatives.
“So this eliminates the automatic pay hike and forces members of Congress to vote for and be held accountable for the $6,000 increase in compensation. And they can’t try to flip it through the back door of another bill. I want to make it very clear that there are no automatic pay rises for members of Congress.”
Nunn mentions another bill he is co-leading, the Back to Work Act, which mandates government employees to work at least 60 percent of their time from their offices.
“We are ensuring that officials, some of whom work in certain departments, are missing from work at a rate of 91 percent or more. We’re asking them to show up for work in order to be paid for their cost of living allowance, and we expect our federal employees to do the same thing and be available when Iowans need them.
