The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a fire weather guard for West Central Texas, warning of a high fire risk in the form of wind gusts exceeding 30 mph, low humidity, and dry vegetation. Residents should exercise extreme caution, as any spark can quickly ignite and spread out of control.
What is the risk of fire?
A powerful high-pressure system is bringing hot, dry air into the area, creating extreme conditions for the fireplace. The risk of rapid fire increases dramatically when the wind gust of moisture falls below 20% and the wind gust exceeds 30 mph.
Maximum risk area
- Able and San Angelo: High winds and dry brushes make these areas particularly weak.
- Brownwood and Sweetwater: Open property and dry conditions combine the danger of fire.
- Interstate 20 and US -277 Corridors: Strong headwinds and dry vegetation can wake grass fire.
Fire safety warns and precautions
The officials strongly encouraged the citizens to follow these security guidelines:
- No outdoor burning: Avoid motorhomes, garbage burning, and barbecues in open areas.
- Safe equipment: Sparks can light the fire by pulling chainsaws, welding, or even trailer chains.
- Cigarette Disposal correctly: A single left cigarette can start a forest fire under these conditions.
- Be prepared to empty: Fire safety scheme and if the situation is worse, be prepared to leave.
When will the circumstances improve?
Winds are expected to gradually weaken late Friday night, but the dry conditions will persist, potentially increasing the risk of fire over the weekend. A potential cold front could bring moisture and relief early next week, but until then, exercise caution.
Be careful and be safe!
This isn’t just another air day; the fire risk is real and immediate. To avoid a disaster, residents should be informed, avoid activities that could start a fire, and report any smoke or flames immediately.
