The Social Security Administration (SSA), which is a key part of the American government’s social safety net, has said that the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program will soon be changing in a number of ways.
These changes will be good for millions of Americans, especially seniors and people with disabilities. Even though times and needs have changed since 1989, the SSA’s decision to update its rules is part of a bigger effort to bring the program up to date.
A change was made so that food help from friends and family is no longer counted toward eligibility. This change could mean that more than 90,000 people get an extra $131 a month in SSI payments.
The SSA wants to lower this barrier and make the program easier for people who need it to get because they know how important informal support networks are to many of their recipients.
The SSA is also expanding the rental aid exception across the whole country. Previously, it was only valid in seven states. For more than 41,000 people, this change could mean an extra $132 a month in SSI payments.
Social Security announced new official changes for beneficiaries in October
The broader definition of a household getting public assistance is another important change.
The Social Security Administration makes it easier for people to qualify by adding Supplemental Nutrition aid Program (SNAP) benefits and getting rid of the rule that everyone in the household has to get public aid.
About 277,000 people could get more SSI benefits because of this change, and people who live in public assistance homes might not have to report as much. The changes made by the SSA are expected to have a big effect on the financial security of people who get SSI.
By lowering the requirements for qualifying and raising monthly payments, the agency is helping some of the most needy groups in a big way.

The SSA’s efforts to update the SSI program are great, but they also bring attention to the problems the organization is still having. Finding a balance between social aid and sticking to the budget is hard and needs careful consideration of both the short- and long-term effects.
On the other hand, these changes give the SSA a chance to show that it wants to help people in need and fix problems with the program.
As these steps are taken, the SSA will be in charge of keeping an eye on how they affect people who receive benefits and the social safety net as a whole.
The agency’s desire to change and update its policies is a good sign, but the SSI program will need ongoing care and consideration to make sure it stays fair and works for everyone.
Stakeholders, such as lawmakers and interest groups, will be very important in shaping the program’s future and making sure it meets the needs of all Americans.
Additional changes that the Social Security Administration will implement soon
According to new letters from the Social Security Administration, these are two more major changes that would affect the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program and, by extension, hundreds of low-income Americans and disabled people.
There is a new rule about in-kind support and maintenance (IMS). With this new rule, the Social Security Administration will no longer look at whether an applicant meets the in-kind support and maintenance (IMS) criteria if friends and family provide food aid.
This will make more people eligible for SSI benefits and raise the amount that over 90,000 people get each month in SSI payouts by about $131.
The rental aid exception will last longer thanks to the SSI program. The Social Security Administration said that all SSI applicants and users across the country will be able to use the current rental subsidy exception.
This exception was only available in seven states before. This can make it easier for people to get SSI and raise their monthly payments by $132 for about 41,000 people.

WOW a whopping $132. What will they do with all that extra money? This is ridiculous. We pay and pay and pay while we are healthy for what? ALL social programs are pathetic keeping people in utter poverty.
True
I agree I paid into social security since I was sixteen and when I became disabled I got a whopping $998 so wasn’t even eligible for SSI cause they said I made to much on my social security for that at the time. Of course I make more now and mind you it’s a very small amount more. And trying to live on that and trying to pay bills is absolutely impossible. I have to use my credit cards to survive from month to month and trying to get my six grandchildren just a couple Christmas present a piece I will go without to do that. And I have no problem doing that because I’m sure not going to let them go without Christmas. But all in all it’s a very hard struggle to live on social security, and I wish I could go back to work. I think that’s why it irritates me so much when people won’t work that are quite capable of doing so, but just choose not to. But expect a hand out. But enough with the rambling thanks again for the opportunity to chat JAM
I am totally agree with you Jeanette Morgan
and your welcome
At least you got more then and had all the quarters pay and was disabled I got 200$ from SSI and ssdi $700 and get the same amount when fully retire
The government keeps people with disabilities poorer and poorer! It is ridiculous! The amount my son gets per month is what I would pay in groceries and he is supposed to pay rent and groceries with his money without any help!!
Hello Holly L,
Amount is very low, American people can’t survive
Yes ,increasing our disability checks will help us to be able to survive with the rise in the cost of everything 🙏 it’s about time they take care of Americans people
Can I apply for SSI if I already get disability socials security benefits ?
Jeanette Morgan, Yes you can apply
I feel for the poor and handicapped. But don’t you think that the lower income people that has worked all their life and paid in social security need help. My daughter that has Down syndrome was taken off Medicade when her dad died and it fell to me. She has passed on but I gave her the best life I could.
