Fifty people have been charged with different gun and drug crimes as a result of a two-month operation in Oklahoma City that was meant to lower violent crime.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco, and Explosives (ATF) and the US Marshals led the operation, which was called “Operation Sonic Boom.” They worked with other federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.
U.S. Attorney Robert J. Troester said, “There is no doubt that Operation Sonic Boom has made Oklahoma City even safer.” “Just this operation gets rid of over 63 kg of deadly drugs and nearly 200 dangerous guns and machineguns from the streets.
” I am proud of the way ATF led this effort and the way our law enforcement partners worked together to make Operation Sonic Boom a success.
193 guns, including machine guns and gadgets that can turn regular guns into machine guns
Over 63 kilograms of drugs worth about $750,000 on the street, such as methamphetamine, fentanyl, cocaine, and marijuana
42 people are being charged with federal crimes, such as illegally trading guns, having machine guns without a license, and planning to distribute drugs. In Oklahoma County District Court, eight people are being charged by the state with crimes like drug dealing and gun crimes.
When the people they protect have life-changing experiences, the early mornings, late nights, time away from family, and scary situations are all worth it for police officers. ”
The United States Attorney’s Office, ATF, and our law enforcement partners did great work during Operation Sonic Boom, and the streets of Oklahoma City will never be the same,” said ATF Special Agent in Charge Jeffrey C. Boshek II.
“Operations like this show how important it is for law enforcement to have real relationships with each other to keep our communities safe.
ATF will stay alert and determined in its fight against violent crime in Oklahoma City and the surrounding areas. It will also keep looking for the worst criminals who live among us.
Oklahoma County District Attorney Vicki Zemp Behenna said, “We appreciate the work of local, state, and federal law enforcement during this months-long operation.”
“They did great work getting these guns and drugs off the streets and out of the hands of dangerous criminals. This will make our city and its people safer in the long run.”
