A guy from Downers Grove was given 20 years in prison by the Illinois Department of Corrections for stabbing his mother in 2018.
Police say Kevin James, 30, pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree murder on Tuesday but said he was mentally ill.
The sentence is for something that happened in 2018 in an unorganized part of Downers Grove.
Around 1:38 p.m. on January 9, the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office got a 911 call about a stabbing in the 2100 block of 63rd Street.
When police arrived, James was standing outside the house with the screen door closed and the main door open. Police said they saw blood on James’s body and clothes.
When the police got inside, they saw a woman, later identified as Patricia, James’ mother, lying face down in the living room. She was unconscious and bleeding from what looked like several stab wounds.
When she got to a nearby hospital, they said she was dead.
As police looked into the killing, they found that James had first choked his mother with his hands and then stabbed her several times with a kitchen knife.
That same day of the killing, James was arrested. On January 11, he went to bond court, where his bond was set at $3 million. Since then, he has been in police arrest.
A judge gave James a 20-year sentence in the Illinois Department of Corrections on Tuesday. He was found guilty but mentally ill.
