When Tax Season opens in the United States, all taxpayers must be prepared to send their tax returns to the IRS. Otherwise, we will have already caused our Tax Refund to arrive late, or much later than we would prefer.
After all, the IRS can respond quickly to tax return documentation if it is received as soon as possible. This type of process can be time-consuming if we don’t know how to handle it properly. There are several reasons why the IRS may take longer to send everything related to the tax refund.
The most common reasons for IRS Tax Refund delays
The IRS may send your tax refund late, which is bad news. However, the good news is that, in most cases, the reasons for the late tax refund are avoidable.
Knowing this allows us to ensure that we are taking the proper steps to avoid problems. In this regard, we can consider the following reasons for the delay in the Tax Refund:
- Lack of documents. This is very easy to avoid. Before sending all the documentation, we must check that we have attached everything necessary. The moment we think we have checked everything, we must check it again so that the IRS gets every necessary document.
- Late submission. The later we send the Tax Return, the later the IRS will be able to check it and, therefore, issue the Tax Refund.
- Not using electronic documentation. Nowadays, there are ways to send documentation to the IRS electronically, such as FreeFile or some similar service. If we have the possibility to do so, we should send it this way to speed up the process.
- Not activating Direct Deposit. Another reason for getting your Tax Refund late is not activating Direct Deposit. This collection method is key to getting the money as soon as the IRS sends it.

Knowing all of this, we can come to a simple conclusion: we should send the documentation as soon as possible, electronically, and double-check it before doing so. Only in this way will we be able to receive our Tax Refund as soon as possible.
The IRS will keep the 2025 Tax Season open until mid-April this year, but it is not a good idea to wait until the last minute to send your documentation.
If we keep in mind that we may need to correct something in the documents, sending them as soon as possible may be the best way to avoid further delays in the Tax Refund, assuming we are eligible to receive it.
