Gospel singer Le’Andria Johnson, who won season three of BET’s Sunday Best, was arrested and charged with public intoxication in Greenville, South Carolina. Greenville Police Department Sergeant Diana Munoz told the Greenville News that Johnson was causing a disturbance on a public street near a restaurant while carrying an open alcohol container.
Police said they arrived at the restaurant BrickTop after customers complained that Johnson was screaming at people eating there. According to police, Johnson gave a styrofoam cup to a man who was with her in an attempt to hide the drink as officers approached.
Johnson allegedly smelled of alcohol and spoke slurred. They also claimed that her cup contained an amber-colored liquid that smelled like alcohol. On Tuesday, Johnson was released after posting a $257.50 bond.
Johnson, who won a Grammy in 2012 for Gospel/Contemporary Christian Music Performance, is best known for her song “Better Days,” which has received nearly 10 million Spotify streams.
On Wednesday, Johnson issued an apology to the Greenville community.
“To my family, friends, and supporters, I just wanted to express my gratitude for your continued prayers and love. “I see all of the text messages and phone calls,” Johnson stated in a YouTube video. “I am just taking this time to say ‘woosah.’ This (alcoholism) is a daily walk, and it has been for me for a long time; I am still growing.”
Johnson has been candid about her struggles with alcoholism. In a 2019 episode of OWN’s Iyanla Fix My Life, the singer revealed that she had completed a 30-day rehab program and spent 30 days in jail for driving under the influence.
