Who does LSU miss from the SEC schedule?
Auburn, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Missouri, Tennessee, Texas
LSU’s missed teams are a mixed bag. In general, you’re irritated if you’re missing Mississippi State, Kentucky, and Auburn – at least until all three return to form – but the Tigers are getting a huge break in terms of who they don’t face.
It’s fortunate that they won’t have to face Missouri, as well as the three SEC College Football Playoff teams from last year – Georgia, Tennessee, and Texas.
LSU football schedule: the good and bad
The Good: Once again, LSU does not have to face the three SEC CFP opponents. That’s a big break, and LSU needs it.
There are no two road games in a row, and between the bookend away days, the Tigers have seven home games in 10 dates, including a week off before traveling to Alabama. Louisiana Tech, SE Louisiana, and Western Kentucky have three non-conference wins, but…
The Bad: At Clemson. Yes, LSU loses out on the SEC playoffs, but the season begins in the other Death Valley.
(Can’t this program just schedule Central Directional State A&M to begin the season already?)
Brian Kelly’s program, which is expected to win a national title already, will have road tests at Alabama, Oklahoma, and Clemson in the opener.
LSU Football Schedule: Best and worst-case scenarios
Best Case Scenario: The Tigers beat the other Tigers to start the season, then defeat Florida to go 4-0 before facing Ole Miss on the road.
They go through that, beat South Carolina after a week off, beat Vanderbilt, then beat Texas A&M to remain undefeated before facing Alabama. They finish 11-1 on their route to the SEC Championship.
Worst Case Scenario: They lose the season opener against Clemson and fall short against an improved Florida in the SEC. Combine that with a road misfire against Ole Miss, and it’s a 2-3 start with the season virtually over before October.
They lose one of their last home games, such as against Texas A&M, and do nothing at Alabama or Oklahoma in a lost season on their way to a new head coach search.
Season Prediction: (January 30) LSU loses their season opener for the sixth time in a row, and perfection will be difficult to achieve the rest of the way.
It gets past Florida and handles the road games against Ole Miss and Vanderbilt, but there is one more mistake to go with the loss to Alabama.
The regular season finale against Oklahoma will make or break the Tigers’ SEC Championship and CFP prospects – it’s January, so I’m leaning against it, but that judgment may change over the following several months.
The Season Prediction will be revised multiple times over the offseason.
