Soon, millions of people who get Social Security will have to use a new way to log in to their online accounts.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) just recently said that people who made a My Social Security account before September 18, 2021, will need to change it to a Login.gov account in order to keep using online services.
The SSA says that everyone will need a Login.gov or ID.me account to get to their Social Security information and other web services.
Over 5 million account holders have already switched to the new system using two-step authentication and do not need to make new accounts.
However, about 46 million users still have not made the switch to Login.gov, and they do not have much time left before the SSA’s possible deadline in September.
Reasons to change My Social Security accounts
A representative for the SSA said that the shift is still in its early stages and that the agency’s main goal right now is to let people know about the changes that are coming.
“We have not yet set a final deadline for these remaining accounts to transition to Login.gov,” the spokesman said. “We are just starting the transition process, and our main goal is to let the public know about these upcoming changes.”
It will be easy for people who already have a My Social Security account to switch. Users who log in with their current credentials will be given the choice to switch to Login.gov.

Customers will get a message letting them know that their account has been linked successfully after choosing this choice. People will still be able to use their personal My Social Security services during this time, and the change will go as smoothly as possible.
It is hoped that this change will help end what the Social Security Administration calls a “customer service crisis.” One of the biggest problems for the agency is that people have to wait a long time for phone help.
In November, people who called the SSA’s 800 number had to wait 42 minutes on average. In April, that number dropped to 24 minutes. By the end of September 2025, the group wants to cut this wait time down to about 32 minutes.
Martin O’Malley, the Commissioner of Social Security and a major supporter of the agency’s changes, said last week that this change was very important.
“My Social Security is a safe and secure way for people to do business with us,” he said. We are excited to switch to Login.gov for our online services. This will make things run more smoothly and make it easier for people to use services from different departments.
