Most of the time, Social Security payments happen on time, but due to Federal Holidays in 2025, there will be big changes. The Social Security Administration (SSA) does not send payments on Federal Holidays. Instead, they move payments to the day before to make sure they get sent on time.
This change is important for people who get SSI (Supplemental Security Income) and other people who depend on these payments. The change stops delays that happen when banks and government offices are closed on national holidays.
First Federal Holiday Will Impact SSI Payment
On January 1, 2025, which is the first Federal Holiday of the year, the first SSI payment will be late because of the holiday. SSI checks are usually sent out on the first of every month.
There will be no payment on January 1, 2024, though, because that is a Federal Holiday. Instead, recipients will get their money on December 31, 2024.
This means that the Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) increase for people on SSI in 2025 will come just 24 hours early. This change is good news for Americans with low incomes who depend on these payments to pay their bills.
Another Federal Holiday to Reschedule Payment in September
On Monday, September 1, 2025, which is Labor Day, there will be another change. Labor Day is a Federal Holiday, so SSI payments that were supposed to be sent on that day will be sent on Friday, August 29, 2025.
SSI payments for eligible people will be up to $967, and this change makes sure that the payments are made on time even though it is a holiday.
