Yesterday, a man from Eastern Carolina won third place in the State Fair’s giant pumpkin challenge.
The N.C. State Fair said that Donald Murphy’s pumpkin weighed 332.1 pounds all together. Pink Hill is where Murphy lives.
“Despite the problems farmers have had in North Carolina and beyond, we have some amazing entries this year,” said April Blazich, who is in charge of gardening.
“It is been too hot, too dry, or too wet at times.” But North Carolina farmers are strong, and these entries will not let people down at the fair.
This year’s biggest gourd weighed 824.2 pounds and was grown by Jefferson’s Ernie Coley.
The State Fair says that the top three pumpkin winners get between $1.50 and $3 per pound.
