Charleston, SC – A major winter storm is expected to hit South Carolina early next week, bringing snow, freezing rain, and hazardous conditions. Meteorologists warn that Tuesday’s weather could disrupt travel plans and result in dangerously low wind chills.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Charleston office, a coastal low will move through the region from Tuesday to Thursday, bringing a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain. Low temperatures may fall into the teens, with wind chill values dropping to single digits overnight Tuesday and Wednesday.
The most severe impacts are expected along major routes such as Highway 17 and Interstate 26, where freezing precipitation and icy conditions may make travel dangerous. Residents are urged to stock up on supplies, keep an eye on weather updates, and avoid driving during the worst of the storm.
The NWS Winter Storm Severity Index indicates a high likelihood of minor to moderate storm impacts in the Charleston metro area, with isolated areas experiencing major impacts. Emergency officials recommend wrapping exposed pipes, inspecting heating systems, and preparing for possible power outages.
Saturday and Sunday will be milder, with highs in the 50s, but the winter storm will arrive by Monday evening. Temperatures will plummet sharply, paving the way for icy conditions through midweek.
Looking ahead, temperatures are expected to remain below average through next weekend, with additional precipitation possible.
