Buffalo, N.Y. – If you enrolled for a concealed carry permit in New York State, the time to renew may be running out. A change in the law in 2022 limited the duration your permit is valid.
According to Niagara County Clerk Joe Jasztremski, state lawmakers lowered the period of a permit from five to three years beginning in 2022. So, if you acquired your permit in 2022, it’s most likely time to renew it.
According to Jasztremski, you cannot renew at a County Clerk’s Office; instead, you must do so online.
“There’s a webpage where you may click on recertification. “You have to have a government ID number,” Jasztremski told WBEN.
One condition has become less severe in New York.
“If you are a Florida resident and hold a Florida driver’s license, you can provide your ID number. It is no longer required to have a New York State driver’s license ID number, but you must have your ID number from one of these driver’s licenses,” Jasztremski added. “You put that in your name will come up, and then what you do is you can check and see when the last time was you recertified, or if you are up for recertification.”
Jasztremski warns that if you do not renew your permit on time, it may be withdrawn.
“State Police don’t actively go out there and do that time, but this is going back several years ago, and we’ve had a change in leadership at the New York State Police Department,” he informed me.
“My advise is to go on there and see if you’re eligible for recertification. If you aren’t, it only takes a second to attempt if you haven’t recertified or are out of compliance.”
A premises permit is still valid for five years.
