Buffalo, NY – Residents in upstate New York can expect lake effect snow showers to diminish today, but an arctic blast is on its way, bringing dangerously cold temperatures early next week.
A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Oswego County until 1 p.m. today, with up to 4 inches of snow expected in the most affected areas.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Buffalo, temperatures will reach the mid-30s today before dropping this weekend as a cold front moves in.
Roads may remain slick, particularly along the I-90 corridor and other major routes, as snow continues through the morning. Drivers should be cautious and allow extra time for commuting.
Saturday will bring a mix of rain and snow, with winds gusting up to 28 mph in the evening. Highs near 39 degrees will fall sharply to the 20s overnight.
By Sunday, scattered snow showers and low temperatures will dominate, with highs only reaching the low 20s.
The National Weather Service warns that starting Sunday night, an arctic air mass could drop wind chills to 10-20 degrees below zero in lower elevations, with even colder conditions in higher terrain.
These bitter temperatures may last until midweek, complicating travel and increasing frostbite risks for those exposed to the elements.
Residents should prepare for extreme cold by securing adequate heating supplies and avoiding outdoor exposure during peak chill hours.
