Who does Vanderbilt miss from the SEC schedule?
Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Texas A&M
The Commodores don’t overlook everyone in the SEC who is good, but they do miss enough stars to matter. Not having to face Georgia and Ole Miss is a wonderful start; missing Oklahoma and Texas A&M is always a plus, and with Arkansas, Florida, and Mississippi State all likely to be stronger, not playing them isn’t too awful.
Vanderbilt football schedule, the good and the bad
The Good: Missing Georgia is wonderful. Charleston Southern, Georgia State, and Utah State are the three automatic wins in the non-conference schedule.
Even though these two could improve, their home games against Kentucky and Auburn are against non-bowling teams. The team will only leave Tennessee once after October 4th.
The Bad: It will be difficult to find a decent rhythm if it is not in the middle of November. The two September road games in back-to-back weeks hurt, and forget about road games in Alabama and Texas. The weeks off occur before home games.
Vanderbilt Football Schedule: Best and worst case scenarios
Best-case scenario: Vanderbilt divides its away games against Virginia Tech and South Carolina, finishing 4-1 in September.
There are enough predicted losses in SEC play to make things a little difficult, but going back to last year with a few tough wins, it gets past a Missouri, a Kentucky, and/or an Auburn at home to get to six wins well before the regular season conclusion versus Tennessee.
Worst-case scenario: The Commodores fail to win their winnable home games, making the SEC season a drag. They’ve already lost to the Hokies and Gamecocks, and they’re 0-5 in the SEC before facing Auburn at home.
What Will Happen: (January 29) It won’t be easy, but Vanderbilt will remain a formidable opponent. It will get those non-conference wins, and Diego Pavia and company will put on the right performance on the right day to get two SEC wins, but it will not be enough to bowl in a 5-7 season.
The What Will Happen page will be updated multiple times this offseason.
