In the US, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) helps millions of low-income families buy healthy food. It is run by the US Department of Agriculture.
The benefits are sent with an EBT card, which looks and works like a bank card and can be used at some stores. Every month, cash back is added to the card, and it can only be used to buy healthy foods. The usual amount of money for November 2024 is set to be $535.
But a family of four can get up to $1,258 a month from SNAP. Alaska is very different. Everyone in the country, including city dwellers, gets the same benefits.
The amount of money that rural families can get each month depends on whether they live in a rural 1 or rural 2 area. It ranges from $1,604 to $1,953.
People living in larger rural homes with seven or eight people can get between $3,076 and $3,516. The average cost for a family this size in the United States is between $1,982 and $2,265.
How much does the extra SNAP payment cost?
There is a different amount given for each extra person living in the home on top of the standard amount. In Alaska’s cities, adding a person costs $283, but in other states, it only costs $220. In rural areas, it costs $361 for rural 1 and $440 for rural 2.
In the rest of the country, the least amount of SNAP aid a family of one or two can get is $23. It costs $30 in Alaska for cities, $39 for rural 1, and $47 for rural 2.
