Official calls from all parts of the US government are used for a lot of different things. In this case, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) may call the U.S. taxpayer to ask for information, serve an order, or do many other things.
But some con artists are pretending to be from the Internal Revenue Service in order to get information and money from people.
These kinds of scams happen more often than they seem, so we need to be very careful to stay away from them.
So, pay close attention to all the calls you take and do everything you can to avoid being scammed directly by someone pretending to be from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
When you get these calls, you can do a number of things. If you can avoid the scams, it would be great if you could help other Americans by giving them the information you have about these people pretending to be from the IRS.
This is the only way to stop them from stealing, which is what they want to do.
What to do if I get a suspicious call from the IRS?
Most of the time, we get calls from phones we do not know in these situations.
The best thing to do in that situation is to never answer the call and straight block the number. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will be able to get in touch with us in other ways if they really want to.
Having said that, there are a few things we can do if we finally answer the phone and find some scammers:
- If the call is related to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), contact the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA).
- If the call is related to the Treasury, then contact the Office of the Treasury Inspector General (TIG).
For this reason, we can stay away from these calls. It is important that we give the IRS all the information they need when we call to report these calls. So, we need to pay attention and share the following information:
- The telephone number that called us.
- The telephone number that we have been instructed to call in the case that it has been so.
- Any name of the worker we may have heard.
- A description of the call, giving as much detail as possible.
- If the worker has identified himself, the employee number.
- It is also useful to know both the time and the area of the call.
Being able to look at all of this information helped the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) figure out who was calling and try to catch them.
We should always be on the lookout for these kinds of scams, though, because they are very common these days and can cause a lot of trouble for people who just want to live in peace and pay their taxes on time.
