(News Nation) — When Jennifer Champion received an emergency alert from her child’s school informing her of the wildfires raging in the Los Angeles area, she said she had to rush to pick up her children.
Champion met her husband after picking up her children, but they didn’t have time to enjoy each other’s company because the family needed to evacuate.
Champion later decided she needed to know what happened to their house, so she, her oldest daughter, and husband rented an e-bike from a Santa Monica shop to see it.
While completing the rental paperwork, Champion and her husband met a man who lived on their street.
“The chances of us meeting were impossible, but it’s possible because it happened,” Champion told me.

That’s when the man informed the couple that their house was no longer there.
While she had hoped the house was safe, Champion says she still saw a miracle in that moment.
“The miracle is the community still is intact, meaning the people, meaning the love that we have for each other,” Champion told the audience. “Everyone is experiencing the same catastrophic heartache, but there has been an outpouring of love — people I haven’t spoken with in decades have reached out. Their love is genuine. Their concerns are genuine. They’re grieving alongside us.”
