Recapping the 2023 Senior Bowl – Defense

After an eventful three days of practices down in Mobile, Ala., we finally got to see the great batch of talent at this year’s Reese’s Senior Bowl face off in live action.

Here’s a quick recap of how prospects from each defensive position group faired.

Make sure to check out our offensive recap as well.

Defensive Line

Bowling Green’s Karl Brooks was the biggest standout on the inside, getting to the quarterback several times and recording a sack. Brooks strives off high motor plays, and Saturday was no different. He’s made a lot of money this week.

Both Byron Youngs (Tennessee EDGE and Alabama IDL) had solid games. The Tennessee product got pressure on the QB leading to a pick six, while Alabama’s got his hand on the ball a few times at the line.

Clemson’s K.J. Henry and Kansas’s Lonnie Phelps were both extremely productive, generating several pressures throughout the game. The two were some of the best players on the field and even won a few times against highly-touted OT Darnell Wright.

Florida A&M EDGE Isaiah Land was another winner, finishing with a sack and big run stop. Land showed that he belongs, winning both inside and outside reps. He could go a lot higher than expected.

Linebackers

Washington State’s Daiyan Henley had one of the better weeks of any defensive player, and the actual game was no different. Henley seemed to be wherever the ball was, picking up a couple pressures as well as recovering a Max Duggan fumble. In a questionable linebacker class, don’t count out Henley rising toward the top.

Jackson State’s Aubrey Miller Jr. and Cincinnati’s Ivan Pace Jr. both had strong outings, with Miller finishing with seven tackles and Pace recording a game-high 10. Despite size concerns, both players definitely did the most they could to boost their stocks.

Indiana’s Cam Jones also made some nice plays in coverage all week. He broke up a seam pass to a seemingly wide open Luke Musgrave early in the game.

Cornerbacks

Maryland’s Jakorian Bennett ended the game with an interception. These DBs benefited from poor QB play, but Bennett’s stock has certainly risen regardless after a strong week of practice.

South Carolina’s Darius Rush saw his day end early, but he held his own in coverage against Michael Wilson in the first half. Rush had a strong week and looks to be on an upward trajectory.

Virginia’s Anthony Johnson had the highlight of the game, taking a Malik Cunningham pass back the other way for a touchdown.

Safeties

Illinois safety Sydney Brown may be the most underrated player in this draft, and this game was just a reminder. Brown made some nice plays out of the box, including a big downhill stop on a screen pass. The National Team Player of the Week did not disappoint.

Cal’s Daniel Scott made a nice play to break on an open receiver and nearly come down with a pick. Scott is one of the better coverage safeties in this class, with versatility to play deep in cover one, in the nickel and as a free safety in cover two.

Florida State’s Jammie Robinson made the special teams play of the game, which can’t go unnoticed. He had a productive week and had three tackles as a DB as well.
