Takeaways From Penn State’s Dominant 55-10 Win Over Rutgers

Penn State went into Piscataway and blew out Rutgers 55-10. This was the third straight no-doubter win for the Nittany Lions and it was really nice to see. Rutgers led 10-7 in the first quarter, but that didn’t last too long as Penn State scored 48 unanswered points.

Once again, the Nittany Lions offense was propelled by the run game, just as it should be. Kaytron Allen had 117 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries while Nick Singleton had 62 yards on nine carries and also added a 100-yard kickoff return touchdown. These two are just incredible. The split carry system has worked to perfection. If Allen has a down game, Singleton picks him up and vice versa. It’s become commonplace now to see both of them break off a big run. It’s hard to imagine that they both have the potential to get even better.

When it comes to throwing the ball, Sean Clifford is Sean Clifford. He missed some throws in this game, but he hit open guys and did a nice job running the ball, adding a rushing touchdown to his statline. For the last two games of the season, Clifford is going to be a game manager and it suits him perfectly. If Penn State can do it, a 10-2 season with a bowl win would be a very nice way to cap off Clifford’s career. It’s almost Drew Allar time everybody, so get ready to buckle up.

The difference maker in this game, like the previous two games, was the Penn State defense. After going down by three early, the defense completely locked in and didn’t let quarterback Gavin Wimsatt do anything. He was pressured constantly and couldn’t make any big-time throws, or hold onto the ball really. Rutgers just seemed outmatched for the final three quarters of the game.

Kobe King had a 14-yard fumble return touchdown, and then Ji’Ayir Brown added a 70-yard fumble return touchdown to kick off the second half. The Penn State defense has proven that it is one of the best units in the country. I have talked in the past that it struggles when it’s forced to stay on the field for a long time, and that hasn’t been the case in the last three games. The Nittany Lions have been able to catch their breath and then go back in and strike fear into the opposing offense. Linebackers Abdul Carter and Curtis Jacobs did a great job in this game flying around, not letting the Scarlet Knights get a lot of yardage, and the secondary was awesome once again. Outside of a 55-yard catch and run by Sean Ryan, no Rutgers receiver had more than 20 yards.

Manny Diaz should be very proud of this unit, and Nittany Lions fans should be excited to see how this defense performs next week and in the bowl game.

I'm a Penn State grad with a degree in Film Production, pursuing my Master’s in Journalism. There’s nothing better than a 14-7 B1G game in 30° weather. I love Penn State football way too much, and I believe that you could be a better head coach than James Franklin. I don’t have many good CFB memories, but my least favorites are when Ohio State ripped my heart out in front of my face in 2017 and ‘18.
