While You Were Sleeping: Week 2 Late Game Recaps

After a wild Week 2, the nightcap was just as stressful, with games lining up to have thrilling endings at almost the same time. There was the appearance of #CollegeKickers, loud crowds and big plays as most of the country had already tucked into bed. To start, we head out to California.

Oregon State 35, Fresno State 32

Fresno State’s Jake Haener became a late night legend after defeating UCLA in the Rose Bowl last year on a last-second drive. However, it was Jordan Mims on the ground, with 21 carries for 122 yards and two touchdowns that lifted Fresno State. A nifty Tre’Shaun Harrison 17-yard catch and run into the end zone gave the Beavers a 29-26 lead with 1:50 left on the clock. But much like last year, Haener led the Bulldogs down the field against a Pac-12 opponent. A big-time connection to Jalen Moreno-Cropper for 45 yards gave them first-and-goal. Haener connected with Erik Brooks a few plays later to take the lead, but the extra point was missed.

With 58 seconds left, it was quarterback Chance Nolan who drove for the win. The Beavers marched into field goal range, but a defensive pass interference put the ball at the 2-yard line with three seconds left. Then after timeouts and different personnel lineups, Oregon State marched out with its secret weapon, Jack Colletto. The linebacker, who rushed for a touchdown last week and had one earlier in the game, powered in with no time left to cap off the absolute thriller.

No. 21 BYU 26, No. 9 Baylor 20 (2OT)

After a slow start, the offenses came somewhat alive as the moon rose over the mountains of Provo. Trickery was involved as BYU quarterback Jaren Hall had a touchdown reception on a throwback to the quarterback. But it was a combination of his legs and arm that led the Cougars on a last-minute drive. A few scrambles and a big 37-yard pass hook-up with freshman Chase Roberts, who threw the touchdown pass to Hall and finished with eight catches for 122 yards and a touchdown, set up a 35-yard field goal. However, it was hooked left, sending the game into overtime. The Bears should’ve won at that point, but a missed extra point from earlier in the game eventually came back to haunt them.

Baylor returned the favor, missing its 43-yard attempt on the first possession of overtime, only to see BYU miss a 37-yard field goal that would’ve ended the game. In the second overtime, BYU didn’t leave it to a field goal, instead punching in a two-yard touchdown run for the lead. The Cougars stopped Baylor on the following possession, and the fans stormed the field to celebrate. It also leaves the question: could this be the beginning of a legit BYU run to the playoff?

Mississippi State 39, Arizona 17

If you have time, you have to watch the highlights of this game to see the wide variety of ridiculous interceptions thrown by Wildcats quarterback Jayden de Laura. After a great performance last week on the road against San Diego State, de Laura and the rest of the Arizona offense was held down by Mississippi State. On the other side, Will Rogers had another good day, finishing with 313 yards on 39 of 49 passing with four touchdowns.
