Five Stars of the Week: Week 15

The FBS regular season has now fully drawn to a close, with Army-Navy and the Heisman ceremony signaling the changing of the seasons. Now the bowls are here to fill December with college football postseason cheer. But this also signals the final Five Stars of the Week for this season. Shoutout to the playoffs happening in FCS, Division II and Division III, but this feels like a good ending point for the year. So for this finale, here are the Five Stars of the Week.

Caleb Williams: Mr. Heisman

USC’s Caleb Williams won the 2022 Heisman Trophy ahead of Max Duggan and C.J. Stroud, who both went second and third, respectively. His 2,031 total points were 611 ahead of Duggan.

This gives USC head coach Lincoln Riley three of the last Heisman winners (Williams, Kyler Murray, Baker Mayfield) and four more Heisman finalists (Jalen Hurts, Dede Westbrook, Mayfield twice).

Army-Navy

No matter the records, the stakes, or even how well the game is played, every Army-Navy game delivers brilliant moments both on and off the field. This year, the game went into overtime for the first time ever, with Army coming out on top in double overtime 20-17. The Black Knights took a 7-3 lead on a blocked punt touchdown to finish the first quarter, but an Anton Hall Jr. 77-yard touchdown scamper put the Midshipmen up 10-7 for most of the second half. A field goal with just under two minutes left in regulation sent the game into extra sessions, where after the teams traded touchdowns, Hall took a handoff and plunged over the pile for what looked like a touchdown. But instead, the ball was jarred free and recovered by the Black Knights, who nailed a field goal to win the honors to sing second.

A Basketball Game Breaks Out in Sacramento

In what has a strong case to be game of the year, Incarnate Word beat Sacramento State 66-63 to advance to the FCS Playoffs semifinals.

If you want to see just the scores, here’s a seven-minute long video.

The teams combined for 1,317 total offensive yards as they traded blows all evening. But the lingering image will have to be this touchdown celebration by Marcus Fulcher

Colorado School of the Mines Insane TD Pass

Colorado School of Mines defeated Shepherd 44-13 to advance to the DII title game. It was helped in a huge way by quarterback John Matocha, who was 28-of-34 for 371 passing yards and five touchdowns, including this ridiculous play that basically sealed the game.

Matocha will try to replicate his success on Saturday at 1 p.m. EST against Ferris State, which is the reigning champion.

Man of the People

Missouri hosted Kansas in basketball for the first time in the regular season since Missouri left to the SEC. The Jayhawks won 95-67. What does this have to do with college football? Well, I’ll let these pictures below explain.

Until next season!
