Rating Quarterbacks in the Transfer Portal by CONFIDENCE LEVEL

Sup. It’s 11:32 p.m. PST and I have no clue how this experiment is going to go so enjoy the ride!

Ah yes! I am so glad you asked about what the confidence here means. It’s as simple as this. I’m sharing how confident I am in the quarterback to succeed at his new school after entering the transfer portal.

Oh, and I had to figure out a scale for the rating aspect of this and came up with the lamest thing possible called “Portal Points” so enjoy cringing at that.

Grayson McCall – 4.8/5 Portal Points

The top player in the portal discussion is up for debate, but the best quarterback in the portal is undeniably Grayson McCall. We’re looking at one of the most precise passers in college football history. McCall has completed 70.4% of his throws and boasts a 187.69 career passing efficiency rating, which ranks first all-time in the FBS. The show only gets better when you tune in and witness the wizardry. McCall is one of the best playmakers in our sport as he works quickly and effectively and beats you with his arm, legs, and brain. I think this kid gets an obscene amount of disrespect due to the scheme he played in at Coastal by the way. Sure it ain’t the most professional attack we’ve ever seen, but golly do people not realize the brilliance one needs to command that triple option concept offense? It’s only a matter of time before we see Grayson take the field in another uniform and play in a new scheme and guess what y’all… I’m super confident in McCall’s abilities to succeed in a new scheme and build that draft stock up as he proves haters wrong once again.

DJ Uiagalelei – 3.5/5 Portal Points

One of the most polarizing players in the entire portal is the one and only DJ Uiagalelei. If I could, I would rate this as a TBD and truly wait on the landing spot before giving a confidence rating. Which I guess I could do as I created this and can make my own rules but whatever. 3.5/5 Portal Points for DJ. I really think there are just a handful of programs that would be good for this kid. And of teams that could be in need of a quarterback… Arizona State, Oregon, TCU, and UCLA are the four spots I think he’s best fit for. We saw Uiagalelei ride plenty of highs and sink to many lows in his time at Clemson. Many don’t want to admit it but I’ve been outspoken about it — the supporting cast in 2021 and 2022 just were not ideal. A bland offensive scheme, poor offensive line play, and lackluster receivers headlined the issues. And yes, I’ll be the first to say that DJ wasn’t that good and I’ll get into his problems, but that supporting cast was TRASH and not many young men were going to succeed at quarterback under those circumstances. The bad with DJ begins with his desire to throw the football faster than a Nolan Ryan fastball. Another issue? His footwork is often sloppy; you just can’t be playing “Dance Dance Revolution” out there on every snap. We need poise in the pocket. Be cool and calm whether under pressure or not. And third is confidence. This poor kid’s confidence was absolutely shot. Opposing fans trashing you is one thing, but when your own fans do it and are calling for another man to take your job. You sink. And it understandably hurt DJ and had an impact on his play. I rated him at a 3.5/5 for confidence because, again, I need to see that landing spot and I need to believe in the supporting cast. DJ is a super talented quarterback and an excellent kid. He’s reached the most pivotal point in his career where it’s make or break. He needs quality help, guys willing to put in the work to help revitalize DJ Uiagalelei and bring back the monster we’ve seen so many flashes from. I’m rooting for this lad… please choose the right spot DJ.

Donovan Smith – 4.1/5 Portal Points

The expectation here, and it’s a strong expectation, is that Donovan Smith will be taking his talents to Houston. And golly do I love that fit. This is a 6-foot-5, 230-pound tank of a man with a dangerous arm. Smith has shown a lot on tape of why fans should be excited about him. Some of the deep throws he makes are so dang pretty, and Smith is quite good at throwing on the run. As he continues to develop, it’s mission critical that he cleans some things up, such as a number of poor throws he’s made over the middle. He really needs to analyze what the defense is giving him in his pre-snap judgement and in-play progressions. As I mentioned, pretty much every human on this planet sees Smith transferring to Houston, and I just think that’s the best spot possible for him. He’ll have a lot of freedom in this pass-happy attack, and he’ll be making drool-worthy plays each and every week. While y’all are selling your Donovan Smith stocks, I’m buying them all and chilling.

I am a diehard UCLA fan that has enjoyed (?) mediocrity year after year. My favorite CFB moment was witnessing UCLA comeback from 34 down against Texas A&M. Being at the Rose Bowl for that historic moment is something I’ll never forget. I have written about CFB since I was 14 and my favorite thing to do is give under-the-radar athletes the recognition they deserve. You might know me from @NoContextCFB !
