Week 6 Player Spotlight — William & Mary EDGE John Pius

This was an easy choice for me. I knew exactly who I wanted to write about coming into the week, and this guy delivered with a stellar performance to secure the Player Spotlight…

John Pius.

The undisputed best player in the FCS. Disagree? I’m not here to argue. I’m just here to educate.

On Saturday, Pius got his opportunity to go up against Power Five competition. Albeit it was Virginia. Nonetheless he didn’t just dominate a Power Five offensive line; he overwhelmed them. Pius finished the day with eight total tackles — three of which were tackles for loss — 2.5 sacks, and a strip sack that he recovered himself. He’s that dude.

That’s on top of a strong start to the season in which he’s collected 11 TFL, 6.5 sacks, and four quarterback hits. He’s on pace to smash his 19 TFL and 11.5 sacks in 2022 which helped him finish second for the Buck Buchanan Award, given to the top defensive player in the FCS. I can say with great confidence that Pius will WIN the Buck this season.

NFL eyes have been on Pius for a bit now thanks to that remarkable 2022 season. With significant interest shown, that performance against Virginia secured his status as a future millionaire.

The 6-foot-2, 235-pound edge rusher is a living nightmare for opposing quarterbacks. He’s blessed with a masterful get-off, swift movement complemented with strong footwork, and violent closing speed. His pass rushing expertise will help him find the field on Sundays. And I expect Pius to impress in the pre-draft process thanks to his terrific athleticism. He would crush it at the combine, trust me.

John Pius is the best the FCS has to offer. There’s no reason for NFL teams to pass on his talents and I highly doubt they will. He’s a lock to be drafted, and he’s a lock to impact the game in a positive way when he finds himself making millions to play the game he loves. Remember the name John Pius.

I am a diehard UCLA fan that has enjoyed (?) mediocrity year after year. My favorite CFB moment was witnessing UCLA comeback from 34 down against Texas A&M. Being at the Rose Bowl for that historic moment is something I’ll never forget. I have written about CFB since I was 14 and my favorite thing to do is give under-the-radar athletes the recognition they deserve. You might know me from @NoContextCFB !
