The Pick Is In — Kansas City Chiefs 2023 NFL Draft

Howdy folks! Welcome to The Pick Is In! That’s right, we’re back for another run with this experiment and can’t wait to see what our GMs, err, writers can cook up. If you’re unfamiliar with this series, lemme paint the picture for you. Our writers will be stepping up to the plate for a NFL franchise and act as if they have full control of the team on draft day. For each team, we’ll have two writers step into the front office and take over as general manager. You’ll see picks made from No. 1 overall to a sixth-rounder, bold picks will be made in unique spots, and trades will be cooked up. To highlight some of our success from 2022, we saw the Bengals trade up to take a star named Tariq Woolen in the mid 40s, the Packers snagged a stud in Jalen Pitre with the 28th overall pick, and with the 98th overall pick, the Saints struck gold with the valuable Zach Tom. This year will be no different. Our GMs will once again be showcasing their unique abilities to find intriguing talent. Whether you know it or not, the draft has already begun and it resumes with The Pick Is In. Welcome to the 2023 NFL Draft. The Kansas City Chiefs are on the clock…

The Pick Is In: BJ Ojulari EDGE — LSU (1st Round, 31st Overall)

If the champs choose to stay at 31, they’ll have a shot to fill the “dynamic edge rusher” hole currently gathering cobwebs on their roster. There’s already a lot of talent in their defensive line room, but adding a true pass rusher to the mix would take them to another level.

BJ Ojulari was one of my favorite players to watch throughout his time at LSU, and I think he’d be an outstanding value for Kansas City at this spot. The Chiefs made a great pick in drafting stud DE George Karlaftis last year at 30 overall, but Ojulari would bring a level of pass-rushing juice that Karlaftis and the other edge players on their roster don’t have.

He’s one of the most skilled pass rushers in this draft, with 16.5 sacks and 25 tackles for loss in 34 games against top competition. He showed time and again that he knows how to attack tackles with a plan, and the diversity of moves he uses to win on the edge is impressive.

While a hamstring injury in training has kept him from running the 40, his tape at LSU should silence any questions about his athleticism. He pairs a great get-off with high level flexibility to bend around the edge. He was also outstanding in pursuit, and his speed made him very effective playing the zone read in college.

While he’s a smaller player for the position and his speed is the first thing that pops when you watch him, you’d be mistaken to box him in as a finesse only specialist. The way he generates power with his lower body and his long arms help him get into tackles’ chests and win with his bull rush, which I think he’ll be able to sustain at the next level.

Concerns about his overall play strength do lead me to think that Ojulari won’t be ready to be an every down edge player his first season. Tackles quick enough to keep up with him will give him lots of trouble, and I imagine NFL teams will look to challenge him with downhill runs early and often.

I think this fit really works because Kansas City wouldn’t need him to be that type of player right away. The Chiefs just signed Charles Omenihu in free agency, who’s a lot larger than Ojulari and would be a better run defender on the edge.

But in high leverage passing situations, Ojulari would be able to shine as the Chiefs’ best weapon off the edge. The idea of blocking Ojulari on third downs when he’s lined up next to Chris Jones is the stuff of nightmares for AFC offensive line coaches.

The Pick Is In: Darnell Washington TE — Georgia (Trade Down)

The Kansas City Chiefs boast that beautiful 31st overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Some say the Lombardi Trophy is the best prize for winning the Super Bowl but I disagree. Owning the last pick of the first round just hits different. With that being said, I will not be using that sacred selection to make a pick and will instead be using it to trade down. Our feeling is that we can let the board come to us and be happy with the player pool available to us early on Day 2 and we can get some nice capital in return for this first-rounder.

The goal here is simple: I want Darnell Washington in Kansas City. Why? I’m the GM, don’t question me! Uhhh, well seriously I’ll describe that later but first Imma need to make this trade right quick…

The Lions will receive: No. 31 and No. 166

The Chiefs will receive: No. 48, No. 81, and Detroit’s 2024 3rd Rounder

The Lions get hungry and find themselves picking in the first round for the third time in 2023. General manager Brad Holmes and his team are comfortable making this move as they hold picks 48 and 55 as well as an extra 2024 third from the T.J. Hockenson deal. Since the trade I made leaves Detroit with picks 55, 152, 166, 183, and 194, it would then become very likely that the Lions part ways with the 55th pick and look to return some draft capital back. While the Chiefs return won’t blow you away, it’s a fair market price. Kansas City has picks 48, 63, 81, and 95 in the top 100. Picking up an extra third for next year’s draft is an under-the-radar pickup.

As I mentioned, I wanted to take Darnell Washington and there was no way I was taking him in the first round. It’s much easier for me to do so now that we’re picking at 48. I’d like to first note that I do think Washington will hit or miss in the NFL based on his landing spot in the draft. Kansas City just so happens to be one of the spots where I believe he’d hit and it’s my favorite landing spot for him. The fit in this Chiefs offense is CRAZY! And secondly, this is NOT a Travis Kelce replacement pick. We hear the term “luxury pick” quite often nowadays, and it often doesn’t even get used correctly. I don’t want to call this a luxury pick and would much rather state that we aren’t taking the best player available or even the best tight end on the board, but we do see Darnell as the best fit for our franchise and know that he’s a piece to the puzzle that can help make the Chiefs offense even scarier. This pick is all about the fit.

Darnell Washington is a mammoth of a human being at 6-foot-7 and 264 pounds. The former basketball star just so happens to be a remarkable football player as well. But this kid truly is a terrific athlete and he showed that to be true at the combine where he ran a 4.64 40 with a 2.67 20-yard split and aced the shuttle with a marvelous time of 4.08. It shouldn’t surprise you when I relay this information to you: Washington boasts 34 ⅜-inch arms and has massive 11-inch hands. This guy is a beast. What else can I say? His catch radius and ability to just overpower defenders with height, strength, and strong hands is just hilarious to think about and see on tape. While I do see intrigue as a pass catcher, I see so much intrigue as a blocker and this is where he will truly shine. Washington is built like a franchise left tackle on a vegan diet. I’m saying he doesn’t have the weight like they do. I don’t have a clue if this dude be eating vegan or not. Don’t make fun of me for not knowing! The quick-hitting points are that Washington has solid footwork, decent technique, but so much raw power and the simplistic ability to move a man like he’s a pebble. With proper coaching, this guy will develop into an absolute force. He’ll set the edge like a stellar tackle.

Like I said, I want Darnell Washington in KC because of the fit in this offense. We’re going to coach him up and he’s going to be an exquisite asset in our rushing attack. He’ll be an extra pass blocker at times too. While I don’t foresee too much receiving production, I do know he’s going to be a mainstay in the red zone and goal-line offenses. Think of the things that Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes will cook up with this 6-foot-7 weapon on the field. I’m drooling thinking about the endless possibilities. There’s Washington flanked to Mahomes left in the backfield, and what happens next will shock you.

He’ll be scoring touchdowns, setting up key blocks, and helping Kansas City contend for plenty more Super Bowls. Again, he ain’t here to steal Kelce’s job, and he really isn’t coming here to put up gaudy numbers. This isn’t a sexy pick; it’s just a dang good pick for the Chiefs offense. And you know very well that Reid will be giggling in the war room when this pick is made. At least that’s how I envisioned it when I made this pick for them.

I am a diehard UCLA fan that has enjoyed (?) mediocrity year after year. My favorite CFB moment was witnessing UCLA comeback from 34 down against Texas A&M. Being at the Rose Bowl for that historic moment is something I’ll never forget. I have written about CFB since I was 14 and my favorite thing to do is give under-the-radar athletes the recognition they deserve. You might know me from @NoContextCFB !
