It was another great week to be a college football fan, as schools seem determined to have entertaining games every time they come out. The early slate was highlighted by USC surviving a ferocious Colorado comeback. The later games were led by the two ranked matchups, with Ole Miss holding out in a shootout totaling over 100 points against LSU, while Notre Dame won a defensive struggle over Duke.
The biggest news of the week: a new number one! Michigan claims the top spot with Texas jumping Georgia as well, causing the Bulldogs to slide to No. 3. Washington rounds out the top four, with those schools being separated by a mere 14 points from first to fourth.
It was a bit of a tame week for the rankings, with only three new additions. Two of those are returning members, with both No. 22 Fresno State and No. 24 James Madison rejoining after a one-week hiatus. Making their debut is the No. 25 Kentucky Wildcats, fresh off a dominant SEC win over the Gators to maintain their perfect start. The schools they are replacing are Kansas, Kansas State, and Tulane. Kansas dropped the furthest as the Jayhawks were ranked No. 19 before a blowout loss to Texas.
There were a few teams that rose this week, but none more than Ole Miss, which jumped seven spots to No. 16 after its huge win over LSU. Oregon State also regained most of the spots it lost after its loss last week, rising six spots to No. 12. Alabama and Texas share the honor of the third-highest rise, both jumping three ranks, with the Crimson Tide moving to No. 14 and the Longhorns sniffing the top at No. 2.
There were multiple big drops this week, as expected when there’s four ranked games. LSU fell the furthest, dropping seven spots to No. 21, while Duke is a close second, falling six to No. 17. North Carolina fell four spots to No. 20 during its bye week, while No. 7 Penn State matches its slide in a winning effort over Northwestern. Finally, the Utah Utes fell four spots to No. 15 after their ranked loss to Oregon State
There seems to be a never-ending supply of ranked games coming from college football, with three more on the docket in Week 6. The big one is of course the Red River Rivalry between No. 2 Texas and No. 13 Oklahoma. At the same time, No. 21 LSU will head to No. 18 Missouri for the first of two ranked SEC showdowns. The other is in the late slate, with No. 25 Kentucky heading into Athens to take on No. 3 Georgia.
