The Transfer Portal CFB Week 7 Top 25 Rankings

The hits keep on coming as Week 6 gave us thrillers from the morning to the evening. In the morning, Oklahoma and LSU prevailed in the early ranked matchups. Oklahoma took an early lead on the Longhorns and was able to survive a late charge to get a massive win for its College Football Playoff chances. LSU meanwhile had a back-and-forth game with Missouri that it ended with a dagger pick six in the fourth quarter.

The later games are where the upsets started to roll in. Georgia absolutely dominated Kentucky to solidify its No. 1 ranking, but the rest of the ranked teams struggled. Notre Dame came out with a lifeless offense while Louisville had its best performance of the season to knock off the Fighting Irish. Mario Cristobal made one of the worst coaching decisions in recent memory and instead of kneeling out a game, fumbled and lost his team’s spot in the rankings. Upset darling Wyoming did it again and knocked off Fresno State, while USC barely survived a 2OT test against Arizona. What a week!

Another week, another group of four new teams entering the rankings. Louisville debuts at No. 17 after its massive win over the Fighting Irish. Right behind the Cardinals is UCLA, which re-enter the rankings at No. 18 after a big Pac-12 victory over ranked Washington State. A bit lower, Tennessee rejoins the list at No. 24 after an off week where a few teams disappointed. The same goes for Tulane, which rounds out the ranks at No. 25. Missouri, Miami, Fresno State, and Kentucky all suffered losses and dropped out of the rankings.

There was a ton of movement in the rankings this week with all of the upsets and near falls, but the biggest riser is North Carolina. Beyond a dominant victory last week, the Tar Heels also finally added Devontez Walker to the roster, which makes them a massive threat. They moved up seven spots to No. 13. The other big movers have more standard reasons for the rise. Oklahoma jumped five ranks to No. 8 after its win in the Red River Rivalry. Air Force and James Madison both moved up three spots after the teams ahead of them took losses. They place at No. 20 and No. 21, respectively. Finally at the top, Penn State jumps up four spots to No. 3 as the fight at the top remains as tight as ever.

There were some massive slides this week as a result of the upsets around the country. Texas and Notre Dame share the honor of the biggest drops, both falling eight spots after their losses. Texas will struggle to build its way back into the top five after falling all the way to No. 10, while Notre Dame is now fighting for a New Year’s Six game at No. 19. Washington State fell six places to No. 16 after falling to UCLA. Finally, Duke fell five spots with its loss to Notre Dame looking even worse, and the uncertainty around Riley Leonard causing doubts among the voters.

After a dominant victory over ranked SEC opponent Kentucky, Georgia reclaimed the top spot. It was the first real marquee matchup for the back-to-back national champion, which is something that can’t be said for Michigan yet, as the Wolverines lost the top spot. Four teams still received votes for the top spot — Georgia and Michigan were the top two vote getters, while Penn State and Washington received consideration as well. Missouri, Kansas, Wyoming, Clemson, Colorado, Wisconsin, Fresno State and Miami (FL) each earned votes.

Week 7 looks to be yet ANOTHER treat for college football fans. The end of season rankings in the Pac-12 will be heavily influenced by some of the matchups. No. 4 Washington and No. 5 Oregon face off in one of the best games of the year. Meanwhile, No. 9 USC heads to No. 19 Notre Dame, both looking to bounce back from rough performances. No. 12 North Carolina will host recently unranked Miami in a game with heavy implications for the ACC, while No. 12 Oregon State will host No. 18 UCLA. It should be another great week of games.

My favorite college football memory is Tua coming in at halftime of the championship game to come back and lead Alabama to a national title.
