Welcome to your Week 6 Headlines in Review, written by the Three Technique Team. This week, we enjoyed absolute chaos in the Red River Rivalry, rumors of Alabama’s demise have been greatly exaggerated, Miami loses in the dumbest way possible, and Georgia silences the doubters. Let us know what your favorite storyline was, and who your top four contenders for the College Football Playoff are in the comments below.

Dillon Gabriel Leads His Legacy Drive to Take Down Texas, 34-30

Rivalries are the best part of college football for so many reasons. We all love the pageantry, the sports hate we share with the other school, and the dramatic finishes that always deliver. But along with those dramatic finishes come the building of legacies, those “I’m him” moments. Dillon Gabriel had that Saturday afternoon when he willed his 12th-ranked Sooners down the field in the final minute to knock off the Texas Longhorns.

Despite it being his second season with the Sooners, Gabriel was hurt last season during this game, meaning Saturday was his first real experience inside the rivalry. After the 49-0 blasting that Texas handed out last season, many wondered what OU could respond with this year. Gabriel and Co. delivered in spades, flexing their explosive offense and a defensive toughness that was entirely lacking a season ago.

For Gabriel, his 285 yards and one touchdown won’t light up the box score, but his pocket presence, lack of turnovers, and ability to keep his eyes down field took Oklahoma from a threat to the favorite to win the Big 12 Conference in 60 short minutes.

Jalen Milroe Records Career Night in Fierce Road Win Over Texas A&M

We all are guilty of counting Nick Saban, Jalen Milroe, and Co. out at some point during the first half of this season. From the sloppy offensive line play to a flimsy quarterback competition in the first week, whomst among us didn’t dare think, “Is this the end for Alabama?”

Saturday in College Station proved it isn’t. This Alabama team might not be the best in the country; heck, the Crimson Tide might not even be a top 10 team when it’s all said and done. But Alabama still remains a premiere program in college football; one that is well-coached and loaded with talent. For Milroe, and yes, offensive coordinator Tommy Rees, to game plan around a shaky cornerback room and then burn the Aggies for 321 yards through the air was proof that the Tide can not only beat you, they can beat you in multiple ways.

Should Alabama fans be nervous about the offensive line? Oh yeah, the Tide were dominated during the first half to the tune of six sacks allowed. The Tide couldn’t run the ball to save their lives. And yet, in a game of adjustments, Alabama’s coaching staff one-upped Jimbo Fisher and those in maroon to earn a pivotal win in the SEC West.

Mario Cristobal Proves the Moment is Too Big Once Again in Stunning Loss to Georgia Tech

“Stunning”

“The worst coaching decision I’ve ever seen”

“Coaching malpractice”

All ways that Mario Cristobal’s baffling decision-making were described as Georgia Tech pulled off the upset against Miami. With just 36 seconds left in the game and the Canes up 20-17, all Miami had to do was take a knee. Georgia Tech was OUT of timeouts. Instead, Cristobal and the Canes chose to hand the ball off once again, and the rest is history. A fumble followed by a furious march down the field and a 48-yard touchdown strike for the Yellow Jackets sealed one of the most unique upsets in college football history…or was it?

Turns out, this wasn’t even the first time Mario had switched off his coaching brain in the waning seconds of a game! In 2018, an eerily similar loss befell his Oregon Ducks when they were just moments away from a win over Stanford. Cristobal continues to prove that while he talks a big game, he cannot back it up. In our opinion, The U will never be a legitimate threat while Cristobal roams the sidelines.

Georgia Proves It is Still Top Dawg After Thrashing Kentucky

Well there we go. Georgia finally looked like the best team in the country in a 51-13 thumping of No. 20 Kentucky. Despite great numbers on the defensive side coming in, the Wildcats couldn’t stop a nosebleed against the Bulldogs. For those who haven’t been familiar with Carson Beck’s game, he showed out against a (formerly) stingy defense. Beck slung it around for 389 yards and four scores, while only turning it over once.

Meanwhile, Georgia’s rush defense, which came in ninth in the SEC in yards allowed, held Kentucky’s ground game to just 55 yards. It was a coming out party for the Bulldogs, who are trying to pull off the impossible: three consecutive national titles.

Their remaining schedule, in case you’re curious looks like this:
at Vanderbilt

vs. Florida (in Jacksonville)

vs Missouri

vs No. 13 Ole Miss

at No. 19 Tennessee

at Georgia Tech
