Week 1 Player Spotlight — Jackson State QB Shedeur Sanders

I’m so happy to be writing another Player Spotlight article and continue highlighting all these studs in this amazing sport. My decision for Week 1 ended up being a no-brainer as Shedeur Sanders stole the show on Sunday in a highly-anticipated clash between two very good HBCU programs. Everyone knows his dad goes by “Prime Time,” but this kid can play in prime time too. Just like his dad.

I was looking forward to this Jackson State vs. Florida A&M game all week. I was stoked. The game simply did not go as I anticipated though as Jackson State DEMOLISHED a really good FAMU team. And Sanders stole the show. He was just undoubtedly the best player in that building from start to finish. The 6-foot-2 sophomore completed the first 17 passes he threw and unfortunately the 18th was dropped. That didn’t slow him down, and he even said he had no idea he completed 17 straight. Sanders moved along and just kept on throwing beams all over the field. His day ended early in the fourth quarter and he posted 323 passing yards and five tuddies on 29/33 against one of the toughest defenses the SWAC has to offer. FAMU kept UNC in check for a while last week. The Rattlers added numerous players to their defense this week, including star edge rusher Isaiah Land, but it didn’t matter. Sanders was just too surgical as he carved up this defense like a Thanksgiving turkey.

The first touchdown he threw was a beam that was fit in between two DBs and needed to have enough lift to get over the linebacker. He accomplished that with ease. The second touchdown came via a beautiful back shoulder ball. He simply threw that strike the second the DB turned his hips, and the ball arrived with good zip and accuracy. One of the best throws of his day came in the late third quarter with just a precise air strike that was floated in between two defenders and dropped perfectly in the receivers hands on the sideline. Speaking of the sideline, how about his interview in the fourth quarter? This kid was referring to himself as “Two” and just talking in the third person much like Deion does. I know this moment had to be really cool for a lot of viewers. I know I loved it and I’m not even old enough to have seen Deion in his prime.

Shedeur Sanders aced the test on Sunday. His throws were incredibly accurate with stellar spirals, he orchestrated an electric aerial attack, and he was uber confident! I was already stoked to see Jackson State play in 2022 because of this incredible roster that Coach Sanders has assembled. Throw this version of Shedeur Sanders into the mix and here I am wanting season tickets. Shedeur Sanders is the truth. How do I know? I just witnessed greatness with my own two eyes.

I am a diehard UCLA fan that has enjoyed (?) mediocrity year after year. My favorite CFB moment was witnessing UCLA comeback from 34 down against Texas A&M. Being at the Rose Bowl for that historic moment is something I’ll never forget. I have written about CFB since I was 14 and my favorite thing to do is give under-the-radar athletes the recognition they deserve. You might know me from @NoContextCFB !
