Predicting The Transfer Portal: Where Will They Go? Round 2

I tried entering the transfer portal and got denied because there were too many names in the system smh. Might as well predict where the actual football players in the portal are headed… If you haven’t already consider checking out my first three predictions! And now let’s get into the next three…

Donovan Smith – QB

2022: 146/221 – 1,505 Passing Yards – 12 TD/8 INT

I believe Donovan Smith to be one of the most intriguing bets at quarterback in the transfer portal. He’s a 6-foot-5, 230-pound tank of a man with a dangerous arm. He’ll be a fourth-year junior in 2023 and is primed to be a QB1 all season long instead of having to rotate in and out like he has in the past at Texas Tech. You’re betting on Smith’s upside, which is extremely high for a multitude of reasons. One being that dangerous arm and the gunslinger mentality he possesses because he’s just so confident in his abilities. He’s shown promise throwing deep, to the sideline, and on the run. It’s optimal that he cleans up mistakes he’s made throwing to the flat and over the middle but that ideally gets fixed as he continues to develop. I like how Donovan moves in the pocket and is analyzing things downfield at all times. You can also fully expect his rushing ability to be a bigger factor at his new school. He’s got solid speed but boasts so much pure power and strength in his upper body. I really think Donovan Smith will be a steal for whoever lands him. His offers are unknown at this time.

Prediction: Houston – I have a strong lean that Smith ends up at Houston, and I know that lines up with what the well-embedded moles in the portal world are saying. It’s an obvious fit as the vet Clayton Tune departs and that QB1 job is up for grabs. I expect Donovan to commit to Houston sooner rather than later. It’s vital to secure this job before Houston loses patience and finds another QB in the portal. I like this fit for Dana Holgorsen’s Coogs. Smith is going to have so much freedom in this pass-happy attack, and he’ll be making drool-worthy plays each and every week. There’s a seriously lethal connection that could be made between Smith and the young, emerging talent at receiver in soon-to-be sophomore Matthew Golden. Donovan Smith to Houston would get me and so many others very excited.

Tyrese Chambers – WR

2022: 51 Catches – 544 Receiving Yards – 4 Touchdowns

Tyrese Chambers is one of the most interesting players in the portal. He enjoyed a breakout 2021 season at Florida International in which he turned 45 catches into a remarkable 1,074 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. That was 23.9 YPC for the Sacred Heart transfer! Following that eruption, he entered the portal and weighed his options with significant interest from Power Five schools. In the end he took a risk and stayed at FIU, saying he owed the fans and the program and wanted to bring them a bowl game appearance. Things just never got going in 2022 as Tyrese dealt with injuries and was seeing double teams and even triple teams at times, and the quarterback play was a revolving door of mediocrity. He just couldn’t ever get the rock. Despite the struggles, there are a lot of really solid programs gunning for Chambers because they know what he can bring to the table. The big-time wideout possesses great speed, stellar tracking, exquisite concentration skills, and is an exceptionally talented deep-route runner. I believe it’s of the utmost importance for Chambers to evolve and showcase a more all-around game. His next school needs to feed him the ball and let him work after the catch. His top eight features: Colorado, Cincinnati, UConn, UCF, Maryland, West Virginia, Arizona State, and Toledo.

Prediction: Colorado – Tyrese Chambers just took his official visit to Colorado, and I’d like to think things went well. Previously, I mentioned that CU should be looking to add at least four pass catchers, so let’s get Chambers to occupy one of those spots. The thought of Chambers burning dudes downfield in the Sean Lewis offense is extremely fascinating. Deion Sanders has the chance to give Shedeur Sanders a legit WR1 to work with. If I’m Tyrese, I would consider committing to Prime Time before someone else takes this spot. I think it’s a perfect marriage where Chambers will get the boost in NFL draft stock he’s looking for and Deion will get the WR1 he really needs for the flashy and fast Sean Lewis attack.

Da’Quan Felton – Norfolk State

2022: 39 Catches – 573 Receiving Yards – 7 Touchdowns

The portal has talent far and wide that stretches the map and dips into all levels of competition. Norfolk State had a DAWG at wideout this season in Da’Quan Felton, and he’s looking for a new home. Felton is a 6-foot-3 giant that displays incredible athleticism. He’s made a number of stellar catches by contorting his body and using that large frame to his advantage by bodying the DB. I think his pure speed will shock people. He’s really fast and uses nice, long strides to separate. Felton really might be one of the most underrated players in the portal right now. People just assume he’s a red zone threat and nothing more than that, but I see a kid that has an NFL future and an all-around game that hasn’t been fully tapped into yet. He just needs to add some muscle, find a good home, and 2023 will be SCARY! He currently has offers from James Madison, Marshall, Virginia Tech, UNLV, SMU, and Western Kentucky, among several others.

Prediction: SMU – I’m going way off the board here. Da’Quan Felton is a Virginia kid and has several offers from schools in and around Virginia. He can stay close to home and I’ll respect that, but what about the opportunity that he can receive at SMU? Felton would have a very strong chance at becoming the WR1 in 2023 and get to work with a QB in Preston Stone who has a very bright future and throws a terrific deep ball. SMU has been so good at developing wideouts too. I think this program would help Felton make the jump to the NFL as it helps him develop into that all-around threat I think he could be.

I am a diehard UCLA fan that has enjoyed (?) mediocrity year after year. My favorite CFB moment was witnessing UCLA comeback from 34 down against Texas A&M. Being at the Rose Bowl for that historic moment is something I’ll never forget. I have written about CFB since I was 14 and my favorite thing to do is give under-the-radar athletes the recognition they deserve. You might know me from @NoContextCFB !
